Hay smell before the curing even start?

I dried my AK way too quickly by mistake, did the Jar thing and it's ok anyway... but now I have this Grapefruit, been drying for 4-5 days, pretty close to going in the Jar to start the cure.. when I harvested I took all fan leaves and sugar leaves off (still a quick trim but it's all I am planning on doing) Lay the buds flat on a screen and let it dry in a dark room. Yesterday I smelled the Grapefruit, it lost all of it's beautiful aroma and now smell like Hay, it's still on the tray! Am I going to get this smell back when curing? thanks all, just cant seems to get this right.

Dry trimming is my secret to killer dank. The buds never seem to smell as strong when I trim prior to drying - therefore I always trim after drying. Something about the way the aroma cells get bruised/disturbed with the wet trimming.
Your smell will come back after a lil bit in the jar - if you do it right. Make sure you bust that sample nug up reaalll good and smell it before you taste it.
 
Trim after drying? I heard that the buds are more susceptible to bruising when the buds ARE dry. Man.. everyone one has a different opinion and their usually completely opposite from the other. Not calling you out or anything just saying I've seen a lot of people that say the opposite.

agreed. try you will see. cut plant at stalk and dry. Its better because the plant drys slower...it has more moisture to evaporate. plants cells stay alive after you harvest and distribute moisture to the dry spots to help a even slow dry.. Even and slow is the trick to a dank smell...kinda like keep them wet until there dry if that makes any sense at all. Brown paper bags work good for a slow even dry and dank smell.

I kindly disagree. I have dried in the high summer heat temps were around 90 and I let the plant dry as a whole and this was a very dank pineapple express plant. The thing was crisp in 3 or 4 days and I cured it for a few days only b4 I let it loose. maaan, shit was so dank everyone keeps asking me for P.E now lol.
 
Just cure and the smell will get better. Next time just learn from this mistake and all will be good.

okay, so my thing is, i don't trim my plants before drying. maybe the big drying yellow fan leaves but i leave everything else to curl up with the bud while it's drying. so when i come around later, it may smell a little off but when i do my final presentation trim. the smell comes back stronger than ever.

i was going by ed's book. it does make sense...until it doesn't.
@Drifter...i always thought 65F was the magic number but i was just proved to be wrong on PE by mr green thumb so idk. guess it's a crap shoot.
 
I've always trimmed prior to drying but I have had a couple harvest that lost their smell completely. When I looked at the bud it was as if it should have smelled fruity almost but it was nil; I will most likely try a trim after dry this time and see if there is any noticeable difference.

I agree with everything green thumb has said so far in this thread.

Slow dry is your friend. I always get a little sad when I see good growers failing in the end when they promote quick drying... And by quick I mean "anything less than 2 weeks". No questions, the best bud I've had has been stuff that took forever to cure.
 
I wet trimmed and hung individual cola's for a couple years. Mainly because I wanted the bubble hash melty :) , fresh frozen trim for the win!


the last couple harvest's have been 6 oz plants that get stripped of all leaves that dont have trich's and hung upside down. takes a FULL week and some change to get crispy enough for jars. One thing Ive noticed is a definate green taste in the late manicured runs but super smooth smoke after a month of curing. My buds are always completely organic and just sooo tastey and smooth, when theres some green taste it stands out and bothers me.my friends dont notice it but I do.

for my plant I just cut down on 4/20/12, I reverted back to hanging trimmed colas. Honestly after 4 weeks of curing I dont think the smells are going to be any less impressive,but the buds just wont have any green taste. O and they should be completely cripsy dry in 4.5 days which is nice since hanging buds take up walking space in the garden area.

what I have been hearing is more important, is the initial couple of days in the jar. Iv heard that opening the jar to burp completely interrupts the chemical process. But buds need to be dry, not just dry on the outside and still weton the inside. too much moisture and buds will mold :(
