Heat shields for Hps lights?

I am thinking of buying a 400watt Hps with relfector ect for my flowering area, but the headroom in this space is so small (only a few inches) i realised that a hps would be too hot, then i found something called a heat shield that (apprently) allows you to have your plants practicaly touching you Hps light? anybody used one of these?
do they actualy work? i will have plenty of fans circulating cool air round the area, will this be enough?
thanks a lot any who post's

Welocme to the forum. I don't recommend the hid lights for new growers for closets. Check out t-5's cfl's and leds y reading things posted about them in this forum. You might want to take a peek at my Journal, we have some discussions about it there. VV

your best bet would be to use cfl's or t-5's like VictorVIcious recomended. VictorVIcious i see you in every post so i want to personally say hello and thanks for all your help not only to me but all of rollitup's friends as well. thanks.:blsmoke::peace::peace::peace:

but some fans to suck hot air out above the heatshield.... or get a cooltube... how much space are we talking ? t-5's come in 2 ft versions and 4 ft versions.. they dont get hot but they put out less lumens then hps and tend to take up more space (horizontally) and cost alittle more... so you get to chose power/heat or settle for alot less heat and alittle less power

This is partially true, the do put out less lumens. The 4'-8tube t-5 puts out 40,000 lumens the 400 watt hps puts out 43,000.

and tend to take up more space (horizontally) and cost alittle more...
This is inaccurate. The t-5 will allow you to use 2 more feet of your space for growing. You could hang it from the ceiling, it's only 3" tall instead of 8", and you can keep it closer to the plants because it doesn't get hot like the hid's. It doesn't cost more initially if you take into account the cost of air cooling the light, forget the fact that the bulbs last 5 times as long.
so you get to chose power/heat or settle for alot less heat and alittle less power
Dot darlin, you are wrong about the efficiency of the t-5's. I am running the t-5 side of a comparison with a 600 watt hid. You can get the t-5 fixture right on top of your plants so the 3000 lumen light difference to a 400watt is gone. Don't believe everything you hear, check it out. I have include a picture or two. You and they are both welcome. Its just paying forward. My original heavy hitters, mods here etc. all helped me. I'm just paying it forward. As your personal knowledge base grows, we will expect the same from you. Welcome to our forum. VV:peace:

1.i said horizontally... not vertically... hps are 2 ft long... t5s are 4... and 4x as wide... easily..

2. t-5s put out 40k lumens but can get closer.. so thats a plus.. and hps put out 55k lumens.( assuming you dont buy a peice of shit).... that t5 fixture will cost 300+ the hps will cost 150.
