Hello all, this is my first grow!

First of all i would like to say hello, and thanks for all the great posts. i've been reading the forums for quite some time now and it really helped me get started.

So far i've just started sprouting 6 different bag(from decent buds) seeds i got from Northern MN under a 6ft 40w shop light. I've been in the search for a new light setup as the shop light obviously wont be sufficient for long. until today when i came across a 400w HID lamp with ballast and a 100w HID at a local 2nd hand hardware store for $30 bucks each that can be wired into a 110w outlit. I dont really hear to much about people growing under HID lamps, its usualy MH or HPS. just kinda ceriouse what the advantages/disadvantes are? and will they both be sufficient for my 5x5x6 grow closet?

Welcome aboard! I'm fairly new to growing and have no info on hid, mh has color spectrum's distinguished for vegetative stage and hps has color spectrum's for the flowering stage. If you have good ventilation a 600w would be best for your closet.

Ventilation isn't as good as it should be since its under a staircase. so I'm just using a fan in the sealed room until i can afford to order or find a nice inline fan or a squirrel cage fan to duct it out of the room properly with.

I'm hoping to save myself some money by using a HID lighting system that costs $30 or i could even buy two or more of them and still be saving money, rather than spending 150+ on a 600w HPS.

im gonna look into this too. i basically did the same thing as you and ended up with a 2 foot plant with a weak stem and a few leaves. im looking to get better lights and start a new grow. im gonna do some research and get back to you with my opinion on h.i.d
