I'm Doug. Please refer to me as such... I won't be mad if you forget though. ;D
I'm somewhere in my 20s, full time college student working towards a BS in information and network security. I've been blazing for years now and just recently had the desire to try my hand at growing.
It started out as wanting a nice little plant to keep on my desk purely for aesthetics. This evolved rather quickly. After I germinated and got a sprout from a bag seed, I started doing some reading on the process. From there I realized that just having this thing as a desk plant wasn't going to work out.
The first plant was admittedly neglected. I was using the wrong light spectrum, no food, nothing fancy like that. I was the ultimate noob (and still am, really). After a pretty good amount of reading I gathered up some very basic necessities. 3 23w 6500k CFLs, 3 23w 2700k CFLs, a couple small (about 1.5gal) pots, and a bag of decent soil. The first plant has been in flowering for a little while now and it looks like it's going to end up half-way decent. If I had to guess, I'd imagine I'm going to harvest about a quarter from it. As unimpressive as that may seem to some of you, it's more than I ever expected. haha. Keep in mind, I'm growing in a VERY confined space. About 1.5' wide x 2' d x 5' h. It's just enough room for my lights, timer, and a plant. I grow just for personal use so this is just fine for me. I would like to build a grow cab eventually... but as a college student, my funds are lacking.
At this point, a friend has brought me about a half dozen seeds to choose from for my next. I've also ordered some extra bulbs as I know my current light setup is WAY underpowered.
Through the forum, I found, what I think, is a great deal on nutrients. I went ahead and ordered Technaflora's Recipe for Success starter kit and it arrived just a few hours ago.
I'm using an 18/6 and 12/12 light cycle for veg and flower respectively.
In the future I'd like to start a journal to document my growth as a gardner. However, at this point I feel like I haven't honed in my skills quite enough to do any boasting. Maybe one or two more grows
I'm not sure what else there is to say. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask.
I look forward to all of your advice and conversation.
Thanks for stopping in!
