Help with amount of plants per tent

I know people will SOG a bunch of plants to get a quicker turnaround, but I'm honestly curious what the actual benefit is. This isn't criticism, but honest curiosity, that I'm hoping someone can answer. It just seems like an awful lot of money and effort to spend to maintain 12 plants when you can get the same yield out of 4 plants in the same space by simply vegging them longer. Is there some other benefit I'm missing?

Time is the major factor, twelve will finish a lot faster than four as you'd need weeks of veg to fill that space

Ok, that's what I thought. I could understand doing that with free seeds but it seems like a big expense, just to shave a few weeks off the schedule, if you are running expensive seeds.

It works the same with cuttings too! Less veg time equals a faster turn around. Unless you are running perpetual harvest, in which case it make no difference.
I also like variety, I've currently got eleven plants flowering in one tent but there is ten different strains in there. Which is also fun
