Helping roots get oxygen

Just popped in my mind:

Would taking 2 or 3 straws and sticking them about an inch or two into the soil help the roots get oxygen and help them grow better?

Seems to me it would just dry out the soil faster by taking an open air path directly under ground. The roots need a little oxygen, not "open air".

In a "normal" situation, the water saturates the soil and as it drains through it pulls air in behind it, into all the little nooks and crannies. So every time it rains (or you water the lawn) the saturated layer sinks and "Pumps" more Oxygen in. It's pretty obvious, but some people don't think of it that way!
