HLG 600w...tent size?

Can 1 of these legitimately flower a 5x5? Or should I just stick with a 4x4? I understand I need some height but either way I have a 7 foot restriction.

I am currently flowering 8 plants in a slightly larger than 5’x5’ area. What’s important when using hid lights and often overlooked is the hood. A wide reflective hood distributes the light better than say a cool tube or gull wing type reflector that can produce “hot spots.” An xl reflector is worth the investment; increases the footprint of your 600w and helps pull off the heat & smell if ducted to an in-line fan/filter.

Their site says it it will cover it in flower but the math comes out to 24W/sqft which seems lower than their 480W HLG550 they Spec for a 4x4 which comes out to 30W/sqft.

Thats what I was kind of thinking. I would have to think the 600 would crush a 4x4 but I feel like it might not actually cover a 5x5. Perhaps if its in a tent, with all the reflective mylar? Idk. The light is coming. Only need the right size tent.

I’ve seen some really impressive results with less than 480W of their boards running in a 4x4 so it could still be plenty. I can’t wait to afford to get one for my 4x4. I have a little HLG-65 V2 in my 32x32 tent that I use for starting my plants and they grow great under it. I usually keep them under it for their first month or so.

I've seen some impressive results from their v2 550. But all ive really seen was 4x4 type areas. Id prefer the 5x5 but that light and whatever tent I get will by my new flowering space. Just wanna make sure all is well.

This light would probably still be OK for a 5 x 5 @ 24". You might not get huge nuggets out of the corners - that can be your canna-butter bud.

Below is a YouTube link with some PAR readings for that HLG 600H QB:

.

Hope that helps.

Just wired the 320 RSpec yesterday then looked at the light for maybe 1 second. I saw little dots for a while after. These boards are bright!!

I checked out that video. I suppose you are right. The PAR readings even in the corners weren't horrible. Cannabutter bud is better than no bud! :)

I would get the 5x5, grow with the one light and then add another. You can then run them soft and be very efficient. Having a 5x5 really is nice, my buddy runs that and I do a 4x8.

600w led crushes a 3x3. 4x4 is adequate. 5x5 forget about it. This is quality white LEDs btw. Those shitty blurples who knows.

Shitty indeed!! 2 600W Reflector blurples in a 2 x 4 tent combined for 520 true - but inefficient - wall watts. If a cola was not right under the diodes or was more than about 3" below the top of the canopy, it was just LARF. Can't wait to see the RSpec in action.

You really think it would only be "adequate" in a 4x4? My current cob/blurple runs 410 watts off the wall and does a 3x3 pretty well, even though its a lower quality light. HLG claims it will do a 5x5, not that I tend to believe any manufacturer any more.

It's more than just the wattage. You have to spread that light evenly across the canopy. Unless you do a custom light spaced out perfectly your gonna have weak lighting on the edges of the tent. I run 600 w of vero 29 cobs and graumaus v3 pucks in a 3x3 and think its perfect. Not overkill. Ymmv. 20200405_173852.jpg

This is great to hear, I have some seedlings I will be putting into the same sized tent with the same light.

Any tips for an LED newbie? This is my first grow in some years and my first experience with LEDs.

How far away do you keep your light? How tall do you like them to get before moving them to a flowering tent? I'm thinking of doing the 32 x 32 just like you do and moving to either a 4x4 or a 5x5 (so i can move around more and have room for fans, a/c, etc) with an HLG 550. Do you do something similar?

I appreciate any help you could give me.

I only keep my plants in the small tent until my earlier grow is harvested. If my 4x4 is empty then I just put them in there as soon as they enter veg. I keep the HLG-65 up at about 24” from seedlings and then drop it down to 18” off the top of the plants when they are in veg.

Awesome, this is very helpful and I really appreciate it. That sounds perfect, I think I'll be doing the same thing, sounds like a perfect way to minimize time between harvests.
