Hey guys,

I have completed 2 successful grows with a 400w system. When I built the room I was running low on money and got a OptiLUME bulb since it was 40 dollars and the Hortilux was 100 at my local shop.

Specs on the OptiLUME are:
Shape: ET18
ANSI Ballast: S51
Temp: 2,000K
Lumens: 50,000
Life: 20,000 Hours

I couldn't really find anything about how this compares to a Hortilux. Now I don't have much extra cash but I was wondering if it would be wise to spend it on a Hortilux bulb upgrade? Could it really make that much difference? I plan on flowering 6 plants this time instead of 4, so I'm worried this cheap OptiLUME might not support all 6 very well.

Thanks a lot!

A good bulb can make a HUGE difference. If you have the money, go for it. it will pay for itself. However you can get a super HPS Solarmax for $40-$50 - I'd go with that instead.

Thanks for the replies,

Yield for the OptiLUME was a little over 5 ounces. Grew three sweet skunks that yielded about a ounce and a half each and one super silver haze that yielded slightly less than a ounce.

I plan to grow 6 granddaddy purples this time. (Could do less if some feel it would be better) But since I have 6 clones, I feel using all 6 with shorter veg time would be faster and better than 4 with longer veg.

Well, I run a hortilux 1000 hps and its the cadillace of the 1k bulbs..

And I run a son agro 430 watt hps bulb in the veg room.

Been using this typeof 430 watt bulb in my 400 ballast and it trys to perform like its big brother.

It has the added blue too!!!

I found a place where you can buy em for $38..

If i were you, id grab one of these.. http://www.atlantalightbulbs.com/ecart/nw012104/PHILIPS317107.htm

Personally, I think they are equal to a hortilux.

I dont think I would change out the 430, for a hortilux..

Because I KNOW they have done me plenty of good in the veg room.

Good luck man :)

hmmmmm... very interesting. Have you measured lumen output vs a regular 400 watter in there? I'm very curious that this works, you'd think it could damage the ballast, break the bulb or something. You say it performs better than an equivalent 400 in the same ballast?

I have a 400W magnetic convertible ballast, that could be a nice little "overdrive" for flowering if it works.

Spend the extra couple $ on the hortilux and get a quality bulb. In my opinion bulbs isnt where you would want to skimp. They last longer and have a better spectrum than most other on the market. They are worth their weight in gold.
