How can you help turn bud purple?

If someone got seeds from a reputable person/business that have a chance of turning purple. Would it help induce the process of turning the bud purple if you did the following?

1- The last 3 weeks before harvest, drop the night time temperature to 55-60*.

2- Two days before harvest keep them in a room at 55-60* in the dark for 48 hours.

3- If by now the bud isn't purple you can harvest the bud, put all of it in the fridge and wait for 4-8 hours. Then dry/cure.

Please correct me if I'm wrong, I'm just trying to put together things from different posts I've read here.

you'll just stress the plant.

purple bud is purple bud. speaking of which, i was always skeptical about all the purple pics, until last week, i bought 1/8 of literally PURPLE bud.

so if it has the purple genetics, it'll be purple. don't try to force it or you could end up with a fat hermie..... i've seen colder temps turn plants purple, but not in a healthy way.

Plants turn purple for two main reasons.

1) They naturally produce purple pigments.

2) They have a phosphorous deficiency.

When plants turn purple due to the cold it is because of the second. Phosphorous is unable to travel in the plants and is essentially locked out when the temps drop. Other ways of forcing purple on a plant are to alter the pH to the point phosphorous absorption halts (around 5.0 for soil or 6.5 for hydro/soilless mediums). You can also cause lockout by applying high levels of the other macro nutrients.

Both of these are not great for your plants. Nothing wrong with green bud. If it purples naturally let it do that but if not let it be.

I have a Big Black plant that is getting close to harvesting and the leaves are starting to turn purple. I heard afghani strains like this one will tend to do that. Is this due to phosphorous def. also? sorry for jackin ur thread man just didn't wanna start my own lol

I've just got a few more questions.

If one of the plants purples naturally and someone makes a clone from it. Would it be more likely that the clone would produce purple buds also?

Could it really hurt the plants yeild if you slowly reduced the temperature?

Most of the strains that turn purple naturally that I have seen do it in a very uniform way. The leaves gently change shade going from the tip towards the plant. See how on the lower pic the centers between the leaves veins are purple but the veins are green? The sharp transition is an indicator that its a deficiency/lockout issue. On the plant that was in the cold again you can see that its on the fringes and there is a sharp contrast versus the entire leaves turning purple.

It can reduce yield but if you do it at the right stage, after your buds have plumped up during the last two weeks, and then induce cold it will stress the plant but can be beneficial. Just like in making good wine, stressing the fruit/flower causes it to release extra esters and resins that can improve taste and smell. You might need to run the plants a little long to get both yield and complete purple. Best way in my opinion to get purple is start with purple genetics or grow outdoors so that you can go long and use the natural cold versus artificially inducing.

That purple phosphorous def bud was amazing btw.
