How did native americans harvest and cure tobacco?

I have two bundles of Havana Burley #1 & #9 hanging on my wall in the den. My grandad told me 50 years ago: "Tobacco needs to hang on the wall a year and it is better after two years". I'm not Indian but I would guess they just pulled it and hung it out of the rain till it was dry.
