How did you discover the internet?

I'm really curious... I myself am in my early 20's, and grew up right around the time the internet became widely available. As a teen, I remember having to use the 56K modems, the dial up AOL... Jesus how slow the shit was! Then DSL and cable came... What got me really interested in technology had to be video games, specifically the graphics. I always thought how amazing it would be to play a game that looked REAL. Today we have almost achieved that.

Since video games were the catalyst, it led to improved speed, enhanced performance, which meant learning about motherboards, graphics cards, memory, etc. Funny how one interest can sometimes lead you to completely new interests... That happens to me all the time.

But the trend on these boards seems to be people of all ages, ranging from 18-70's! And all of us are using the internet! So how did it happen to you? I'm particularly interested in the older generation, like, half your life was lived without this amazing technology, how did you get by!? How did you conquer boredom? What kinds of differences has the internet made in your own life?

I've been online since the only way to access the net was through local bulletin board services that you dialed into. This was Pre AOL days. The modem speed at the time was 12k. As you logged on and received the text and ANSI graphic welcome screen, it scrolled so slow you could actually read it as the screen loaded. Back then I thought 24k modems were a God send, lol....

Did anyone else play Trade Wars 2000 on those BBS back in the day?

anyone else use AOHell or any of those other programs to fart in AOL's face? I know my friends and I did. Nothing like some 12 year olds using bunk CC numbers to generate AOL accounts. In retrospect a totally stupid idea, but when your parents won't pay for it ....

I remember having a 14.4 modem on a computer that I would play mudds on. I had a very older cousin in the tech world that would bring us computer stuff. This would have been around 1994-5

I started using the internet at around the age of 15 at school as a "learning instrument" (basically a tool that allowed you to copy and paste whole assignments :)). Didn't have it at home until i was about 18. The only thing i use it for these days is email, media downloads and RIU, and RIU simply because it's relevent to a time consuming hobby, my hobby used to be computers so i was on a few copmuter forums, got bored of endless upgrades after i realised that nothing required the extra power (even today i'm on hardware any years old that has never once been taxed to it's full potential) so i dropped off the computer forums.

It's just a source of films and tv, and handy for emails, other than that i don't understand how epople can while away their spare time "browsing". Browsing what??? I can rarely find ANYTHING that is worth my time reading without going on with a clear purpose of what i'm looking for.

I discovered the internet through my necessity for porn.
We all did, stop denying it!

I remember having to download porn, because looking at it or watching a video in your browser was just too slow. Hahaha.
I'm only reeeeeally tapping in (excuse the masturbation related pun) to the internet now, in my 20's, and it's a pretty awsome tool. I think in the years to come people wont need to go to school anymore. I have taught myself so many things just from researching them on the internet. It's great!

Look up the urban dictionary for example, hahaha.

I remember my first family pc. I remember my dad went out and had one custom built, this was like in 1994 or 95. It had like a 12gb HD, 2 mother boards even though they did not have dual core processors yet, a 24k modem(remember begging my dad for a 56k which cost over 200 back then) and like 56 mb ram. It ran windows 95 and cost my dad around 5 grand with all the "super upgrades". It worked though. My parents held on to the same comp for like 10 years, my dad finally bought one of those big screen mac comps just recently.

I turned 20 in 1986. Back then we just hung out, got high, listened to music and generally interacted with our friends face to face. We didn't have cell phones and text messaging. Since it didn't exist we didn't know we were missing out. I figured out computers and the internet because my job and work life migrated in that direction.
I remember a time when we thought "pong" was a bad ass video game. Nintendo came out and blew us away with the awesome graphics. The arcade games were already pretty cool but to play mario and zelda at home? That was a stoners dream come true.

My father used internet for his company, then when we got the first home computer, nobody taught me how to use it, i just learned by myself
the main use i gave it was to get games
we couldn't afford game consoles so i got into emulators
i remember i was playing Pokemon Yellow before anybody in my country did, i had to patch it from the Japanese version
that was my first internet accomplishment =)

The day I discovered you no longer needed to pay $9.50 to see a movie in theaters was awesome!

The internet is seriously THE SHIT! You can do just about anything with it.

Male-17-North philly-Single-with pic S2R. <<<<<<< This is why and how I became interested in computers.

Going into chatrooms, picking up girls and having sex. I use to say " it was like going to a club or a party, only I'm in my undies" lol

Only time I moved from the comp is when I got a broad to bang for the night...

Damn, that sounds like risky business from where I'm sitting. How did you handle the risk of STD's?

There was always some weird taboo about picking people up off the internet around here, probably because it's not the "traditional" way to do it...

I strapped up a jimmy, mind you it's not 100% effective and can always fail but when your young.dumb. and full of cum that's how it goes down. And AOL provided more then enough pussy.
You have the same chance of catching std's if you met a girl on the streets or comp.

No difference. My screen name was " FeelMyJimmy " lol and "EaglesOutlaw"

I wasn't always smart and yeah it was risky at times but now that I know I'm good, I don't regret one moment of it ;)
