How do I get greater yield per plant?

I have a great setup with a 400w hps for flowering. I use ocean forest soil. I water using dr. hornsbys big bud and super thrive. After nutes the ph is 6.6 to 6.8 I am getting great smoke but a very low yield per plant 1 ounce or less. Mostly less! I have been topping them 2 to 3 times during the veg cycle. Should I stop topping and just let them grow? Any advise is very thankful. :peace:

What does pinching the branches do?

you get greater yeilds by learning the plant I believe . it could be that the ladies love the strength(higher nutes)or not, and some plants like lower to higher ph when I check my res I kinda keep a mental note on what there consuming more of , different mediums different systems,in/out doors keepin your room cool and the air moving its gonna take some fine tuning to really get to know your girls best ,get a graph chart and start experimenting inside what you know to be safe of course
good luck and have fun doing it
FIM: Im not really sure but for safe measures I always pinch the top my plants in the first 5 to 6 inches I was told that the plants would not repair but I guess trick the plant to form another main and the end result is many mains resulting in a bush

Hey bud. I have a few questions before I can make many comments. What strain are you growing? How big are the plants when you start to flower them? A foot, 2 feet, 8 inches? How far away is your light? Whats ur growing area? How many plants are in that area, and what size pots are you using?

You should definitely be getting at least 1oz per plant minimum. I twice flowered 4 plants under a 250w hps and i got 1.5-2oz from each plant.

Some quick suggestions i would have to make is make sure the light is no more than 1.5 feet away from the tops of the plants. It should be closer but I'm not sure of the area your growing in. Are you using mylar around the edges of the room?

Also I would lower the PH of the water to 6.0 - 6.4 after nutes are added. Mary-Jane prefers to live in a slightly acidic soil in which more nutes will be available to it.

1 other thing is that Big-Bud is a supplement to increase bud growth, but it does not supply the macro or micro-nutrients a plant needs throughout its life-cycle. Superthrive is more or less the same thing and I believe is also meant as more of a transplant shock absorber. Without true nutrients a plant will not grow even close to its true potential.

I use Fox-Farm 3 set nutes and add big-bud starting at week 2 in flowering. I also add molasses every 3rd watering to help sweeten the aroma and flavor of the bud and add miconutes to the soil.

Thats just my 2 cents answer some of my questions and I'll try to answer yours.

Happy Growing.

If you want more yields I suggest you let your plants grow. Most people dont have the room to let plants grow as tall as they can or they just want some smoke as fast as possible. I personally let my plants grow in my basement 6/7' tall, some topped some not. I get pounds of smoke not ounces, but thats because I am in no hurry to harvest. Is that what your trying to acomplish?

If you look in the faq I'm not exactly sure where they suggest that you do not use superthrive in flowering. I just found this out recently as well and was told by several other people on this site. So that may be a very small part of your problem. Also the closer you can get your lights without heat issues the tighter your buds will get. Lets get some more specs on your grow area and we can try to help out more.

Definitely get some macronutrients, such as Nitrogen, Potassium, and Phosphorous.... Just a suggestion, but lots of people have been doing it ever since it was discovered plants require said nutrients in large amounts to grow.

I just want it for myself so I don't have to get involved with the dealers. I have plenty of time and can wait till the cows come home if I have too. I'll post pics of my grow room and the 2 babies I have at the moment tonight or tomorrow morning. I'd like to see those 7' monsters though. I bet that's a beautiful sight! :peace:

I would be careful going too tall with only a 400w hps, the penetration is just not there to really make good use of a 7' tall plant. personally with a 400w hps I wouldn't go over 3'. If you go too tall you will be wasting a lot of the energy the plant receives from the lamp on lower branches that won't produce much and you will actually lose yield.

The 2 babies are at 3 feet tall now. I don't expect them to get much taller. Do you think I should add another 400w hps?
