hps ballast

hey guys im new and im shopping for my new hps lights but im confused on how to set it up like whats a ballast and what to i hook it up to a normal lamp?( i know you dont but what?) some help would be very apreciate dim just confused on what to buy and stuff.

the reason you are confused is that most lights you buy for other reasons come with the ballast as part of the light fixture (flourescent tubes) or the bulbs themselves (cfl)

the ballast for an hps light is physically separate from the fixture although it is usually sold as part of the lighting system. you'll buy a light system that has one cord from the ballast to the light fixture and another cord that goes from the ballast to a normal wall socket. make sure to buy a system with a ballast for the right voltage - probably 120 if you live in the US.
