HPS bulb differences

I'm thinking about getting a 400 watt hydrofarm complete system w/o bulb. MY QUESTION IS.. what are the differences between hps bulbs ..i've noticed hortilux are much more expensive than other no name ones that are available online. WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE?? besides color maybe?? and is it bad to go with a cheaper bulb??
 
well the thing is color is the reson you would buy the hortilux it's has more blue spectrem witch is better for vegging but im not shore if it has enough to only use a hortilux for veg and flower most people get a electronic ballast that you can switch out MH and HPS also iv heard the extra blue during flowering will add a lil to you'r yeild
 
Hi output HPS are said to emit more lumens than regular HPS. Something abt how the bulbs are more translucent and more effectively let the light from the arc get to your plants. I've also seen claims of lights having being more balanced in the red, blue and violet spectrums. IDK if any of this stuff is true, but you can do your own research. Compare different varieties of bulbs on Ebay. Over all a well made HPS should last longer and be more efficent.
 
The spectrum is the big one. Also, some bulbs have lead in the base, which in my experience isn't a good thing. I recommend any bulb without lead in the base. That shit will melt, drop on your glass, pop the bulb, and then leak hot lead on your sheild.

In a 400 watt system you could run 20 dollar bulbs from lowes. I'm telling you, it's a good bulb. The hortilux is for growing, and probably a better bulb. I'd keep the sylvania bulb from lowes as back up.

the thing is is that right now I'm growing with cfl bulbs...WHAT A PAIN IN THE ASS!!! they work great but are too tedious... to be honest i think they're great for vegging but once the plant gets taller and more dense you have a big problem on your hands.. anyways.. i need the hps right now for flowering..AS WE ALL KNOW IT'S CHRISTMAS TIME... so cashflow sucks....the system is only gonna go for about two hundred w/o the bulb and is also a 400/600 watt, and you can also change from mh to hps .. i can't really afford to throw another eighty to a hundred dollars into it. however, i haven't done any research yet but i'm wondering if MH might be cheaper
 
ya for fat bud's HPS seem's to be you'r best bet and if u have the clf's you prolly dont even need a MH id just wait to get the MH wen you'r clf's weaken unless u want huge beast's to put into flowering

yeah i'm only using the cfls for the moment until i can get a better lamp system, but are you talking about cfls instead of hids for flowering????
 
no i was just saying it sound's like the clf's would be enough for just the veg cycle and the hps for flowering
