HPs cool tube ? anyone who has one

hey ive asked this once befor but im rele in denial... basicly i have a 3 ft high space. and a regular hps would prolly burn the fuck outa my plants. but would a 250 or 400 w hps in a cool tube make the space considerably cooler? assuming i have a fan on both sides of the tube ? how close could plants get to the light without being burnt?

ive herd people say they can put there hand right next to there hps with no heat issues. and ive herd others say there plants cant get anywhere close..another thing. would this be possible. say my growcab is aprox

3Ft high x 2 Ft deep x 4 Feet Wide what are the diffrent ways i could mount an hps to make it work? could i say put it vertical ? like high on the top right vertically down. that way i could utilize my horizontal space but would i get throu all that foliage to the plants in the back ?

just haveing trouble thinking ima have to flower wit cfls.
105 watt cfl = 6000 lumens 150 watt = 8000 lumens
150 watt hps = 13,000

so basicly id need alot more cfls to do the same thing as an hps

I've a cool tube...1 fan(6" inline) on one side connected by 6" ducting (200+ cfm) and I can easily touch the cool tube with it only being slightly warm. (250hps).

i'm in your same boat man, i got a space about that big i use to veg under my counter. I use T12 fluoros now but i'm going to use a 4 bulb 4' t5 fluorescent rig with the grow tubes next time around. SOme of the T5 rigs put out comparable lumens and color spectrums of mh or hps systems, use less power, fit in tighter spaces, and don't require elaborate ducting for heat. you might look into those

i never thought of more floro's as an option. could you give me alittle more details? how well it works, how close plants can get , how much each bulb puts out are they all just 28 watt bulbs?

Thanks McLovin!! That's an awesome thread with a great DIY setup. I'm going to make one of those for my setup too.

"how close would plants be able to get to the light?" <- They could probably wrap around the light and not get hot enough to burn.

Yeah, the builder shows a pic of himself holding the glass after it's been on for 6 hours and he said it was about as warm as the top of your dryer after a load of clothes.

ok so now im confused as fuck..... Hps with COoltube or T5 FLoro thing ;) you guys are talkin about the hps right?

cmon now you guys are just fucking with me... which would be my best option. CFL t5 Or Cooltube most efficiency/heatlessness :) ima look into it but some opinions would be nice

also i have a few things of nutes would i be able to use.. say tomato food ? or mG fert till i get specific nutes

the values r as folloes
tomato food 5-10-10
nameless thing 12-18-6
MG 15-30-15
MG 30-10-10

i think the last mirical grow thing would work the best? it has the most nitrogen content and a decent level of the other 2 so it would be good for veg? then the first MG would be decent for flowering ?

3 feet is not alot of height even for cfls, ive seen guys use 400,s with cool tubes and the plants touching the glass.

yea but ive seen some who get within 1-2 ft and burn :) im just trying to fuigre out what would be my best bet. i know 3 ft isnt alot of space to work with but with 2 ft lst'ed plants i believe i can get a decent yeild. if i get 1 oz a plant i'd be very happy but i can go buying a 200$ light and have it be to hot for my little cab

I do not suggest using MG... Neither would most ppl here...

On light ing it is your ultimate decision... But now you have a fer options to research... =]

My little grow room is only 4' tall, and I am running a 400W HPS with a cool tube. I have it on 24/0 right now (for the past 2 weeks or so) and heat doesn't seem to be too much of a problem. My ambient temps stay in the mid to high 70s most of the time. As far as how close the plants can get to the light, it all depends on the ventilation. I think it was GardenKnowm who once said something about how you could put a 1000W up your ass if you had enough airflow. I have one 250cfm inline fan from Lowe's. The glass stays pretty cool, but I wouldn't want any plants to be touching it directly. What you really need to worry about is really getting your LST chops down. My cooltube is 6" thick. Add about 2 more inches for the hooks on the cooltube and the hanging hooks on the ceiling. Take off another 6" or more for pots (I know you are not even considering hydro in this space, right?) and that takes you down right under 2 feet. That is not a lot of room.

So, yes, it is possible. Have you considered a ScrOG? I think this may be your best chance for success.

isnt there pics of johnny blunts plants touching the cool tube 400 or 600 you might want to check that out.

and yes i origianaly was planing to do a scrog. but i didnt wanna fuck around with all the nets and tieing my plants to them. i thought it would be a better option to just use sog/lst to keep my plants around 2 ft lsted and hopefully id get 1/2 oz - 1 oz of each plant
