Hps/ mh hps what wud u buy

In my first grow and lookin to upgrade from my cfls for my next grow found 400watt hps for 119$ and a mh/ hps for 159$ would it be wise two buy the two bulb deal I plan on vegging with my cfls is it worth the extra 40$ for the extra mh bulb which i may never use any and all advice appreciated...

If you ever plan to use both then go for it. I always buy switchable mh/hps ballasts but that's just me.

yea grab the switchable the $$$ isnt really that big of a difference and get wat ever you want if you do get eye hortilux super hps my oppinion.. blue mh is beast too ..

If you are going to buy a 400-watt buy one with a dimmable digital ballast and scrap the CFL's. Veg under MH and flower under HPS.

that is a good deal from HTG,if it was me i would spend the extra 40 and get the MH bulb also.

i buy your standard 1000wtt HPS BALLAST and run any wtt bulb you want in it.. HPS bulbs or MH bulbs it will light both up with no ill effects..

Spend the extra money and get the MH/HPS. Your plants will love the lighting in veg under an MH bulb. Good luck.

Ok thanks every one believe I will spend extra 40 how big grow space will400 watt supply sufficent light for hoping 3x5 tent thans again

I would reccomend jumping to a 600 personally. If you got the money you will notice the difference. Also be aware that even a 400 will heat up your room significantly depending on ambient temps. Id reccomend an air cooled hood if you can get it. I have a htg $120 400 watter that a friend gave me. I have a 6'x8' area with ambient temps in the mid 60's but if i turn that on it will raise my temp 7 deg. Not a big deal for me could be a big deal if youre dealing with higher ambient temps and a smaller space.

Your 3x5 tent will work perfectly with a 400w MH/HPS. I am running an HTG 400w MH/HPS currently in a 4x4 tent. Although I plan on updating my light to a 600w digital ballast. I would only get a 600w light if you are planning on expanding your grow, you you may decide to do in the future.

I currently do this with a 600w lumatek.

I use 400w MH on 18/6 using my dimming feature i dim my ballast to 400w. I use this MH for almost 2weeks of 12/12 to limit stretch.

Then switch to my 600w HPS for the rest of flowering.


I personally wouldnt use a 400w in anything much bigger than 3x3 floor space, i use my 600w in that size area.


Dimming features on ballasts are ideal as you can pop seeds under them if your environment is spot on.
