it goes into a big socket which usually comes as part of a reflector which all connects to a ballast which you plug into the wall. do you have an hps bulb already, if not basically where ever you look for you bulb ask for reflectors and ballasts, if your at a hydro shop they will help you out if you are looking on the internet they usually sell it all as packages.

Yup.

HPS is a system, not just a bulb. (there are medium based HPS bulbs, and the more standard 'big base' mogul ones)

You need a ballast (get a premade one! Having to ask about them kinda negagtes the DIY aspect) Cord set/socket and bulb. A sealed air cooled hood is best if in a small space (aka: closet) vented in/out of the room.

Figure at least $100 USD for a ballast /lamp kit. Air cooled hood with ducting and fan closer to $400.

Welcome to the big time.
