Is this a good light system to get started with?

I would say no, it's old tech, there is some really good lights in USA.

Wait for a few more experienced peeps to give you better answers.
Meiji do good lights in Alibaba and kingbrite, may have spelt that wrong, but the shipping might be too much for you, it depends on your budget, there are some brilliant companies in the US, if you don't have much money you can always go with cmh/HP's etc.
Might be an idea to mention your budget here.

So my budget was 550.00
Never been one to be on the cutting edge of trends. Some may consider me to be cheap, I say frugle.
That said, got what I thought was a good deal for value, a 5x5 tent two of the above mentioned fixtures, and carbon filter/fan, a timer, and hanging attachments. For 580.00 plus free shipping.
I have seen several posts here, and else where, with this fixture in a tent. So figured I couldn't go to wrong.
