the usual cheapest way to start is with a cfl setup in the closet
$150 goes a long ways with this setup, works best for a smaller plant, under 3 feet
as you get bigger, cfl's are fairly expensive to cover a larger plant adequately

Get those packs of 26 watt cfl;s. They are about $10 bucks for 5 or 6 of them.

get the T splitters which are lie $2 bucks each.

Use cardboard box or closets. Look on foum for stealth growing or the DIY section has alot of info.

absolute cheapest way to do this. what, a single plant grow?

150 bucks. here we go, the number on the right represents what's left of the 150.

grow medium: soil. type: FFOF - 20 bucks = 130
Nutrients: None for veg, soil has nutes. Flower: FF Tiger Bloom - 15 bux = 115
Lights: 3 42 watt Softwhite Bulbs, 24 bucks = 91
1 4 pack 26 Watt Daylight - 7 bucks = 84
Clamp lights - 4 - 20 bucks = 64
4 y splitters, 8 bucks = 56
1 multiplug/surge protector, 4 bucks = 52
timer - 10 bucks - 42 bucks.
ph testing drops - 10 bucks = 32

that's the basics. it'll grow 1 plant well, you should yield close to, or more than 1 oz....

you want to do something about the smell so you can build roseman's odor bucket. google it. i think 32 bucks will do for it. maybe a little more.....

Just make sure you read everything you can on here about cfl techniques or it'll be a $150 waste.

Yes, I am a cfl grower, too. I would have suggested a pc case, depending on availability. I get offered free beater pcs every few weeks, so, having something like 6 cases kicking around, that was the way I went. Also, if you want to go a different direction, T5HO is AMAZING for lighting. Far better than CFL, not much more bucks per watt.

Also, you can cut corners on the soil. Miracle Grow Organic is not a bad alternative for half the price. MGO is the only soild MG makes that's worth a damn. The other stuff is ass.

If you can skip the carbon filter, you shouldn't have any problem with that budget. Keep in mind that a fan, carbon filter, and the flex hose will cost you $100 alone, so you might want to go with one of those chemical smell eliminators, like was mentioned above. I also agree that CFLs are the way to go, as long as you do a little homework first. Be sure to add more, if you don't think it's enough lighting.

i forgot to add this:

to control PH:

if you're gonna use tap water, you need to let it sit out for 24 hrs to let the chlorine evaporate. if it's alkaline (drops cause the water to turn blue) use vinegar to bring the ph down, if it's too acidic (the drops cause the water to turn yellow or orange), use baking soda to raise it. that's it.... no need for PH up or PH down....

^Sweet man, I might try something like that with a bunch of buckets linked together, when i decide to give hydro a shot. Need perfection though, so I need to finish working out the last couple bugs out of the soil growing, first.(won't be long)

2cd do you only have 150 or is this like an every month budget

and if you are really hard up on cash you can START your grow with
bagseed, dirt, and cfl light with hood and cord for less then 20$- giving you 2-3 wks to gain more funds and learn more on growing before its time to flower

this is all golden information... do the chemical odor fighters work well? i saw the rosemans odor bucket....it looked promising but i still don't know a lot about it

the 150 is just how much i am willing to spend at the moment... i would like to have a good setup....ill prolly use a lot of ghetto techniques but that is the way i roll...

well we have to know a few things to really help you
why are you growing. just to see if you can, or are you trying to never have to buy again. are you trying to grow for sport or for profit- my first grow was a for the sport of it , i just wanted to know if it could be done
do you live by youself because less then 3 plants want smell that bad if you keep 'em short (less then 3ft) - my first grow i did 4, 5ft trees and i grow them with shop lights in 5 gal buckits i only really smelled them at lights off, but keep in mind both me and my room mate smoked heavy

Hey clap. You've mos def gained a grip of useful knowledge from all. However I figured id put my 2cents in as well.. keep in mind that u want most of your lighting for veg (which is the 1st stage of growing) to be 6500k. Its good to mix a few 2700k but mostly 6500k for veg. With this considered I went with 40watt 6500k 4ft flour. U can get the shoplight from depot for 9.74 and the bulb pack is 8.97. I put up 2 of those so 4 bulbs total. Then I'm using 2 42 watt cfls and 1 68watt cfl all 3 are 2700k. Not sure if space is a prob for u as mine is in a closet and its wide enough to accomadate 4ft tubes
