i may or may not be the only person who views that martial arts is a great thing in this world. in ancient times some styles were banned for use or outlawed because of its use. i'm taking tai chi (both hard and soft style) and taekwon do a form of karate. i know most people that toke up are like pacifists, i am too, but fighting isn't at all a bad thing; we fight for the right to smoke pot, women fight against abortions, the people fight against their govt. as far as i'm concerned the will to fight ain't going nowhere so after this my fighting name might be... ugh, might be? dammit, well i can't think of any right now the good ones are taken.

im in mma myself i never told anyone on here ,

i never felt the need to ...but since you brought it up....now you know.

i started when i was 8yrs old after i got my ass kickd by 8 little homies..

i came home all fucked up . my mom was like , ( omg what happened , what happened )

the next week my mom put both me and my brother in the authentic school of karate..

witch was actully not karate , it was taekwondo.

taekwondo is a korean style , where karate is a japanese style...

i moved to mma when i was 16...

im now currently at ray rice school of martial arts..its mma / freestyle

its a blend of taekwondo , karate , jujitsu , kempo , aikido , shotokon , kickboxing , and grappling...

its a very well rounded school....i even got my kids in it..

we go to competitions about every 3 - 4 mounths..

i love it.. i think everyone should take some type of martial arts..especially with the day and age that we live in...

i wish you the best of luck with your training..

dont get frustrated with it...you wont be able to do everything that you want right off the bat..

just keep training , keep stretching . and you will be throwing those crescent , and back round kicks with ease...

always pratice on your form , no matter how good you think it is...

and also pratice your katas...especially if you want to advance....

you will have a different kata for every belt rank as you advance.....

good luck my man.......:peace:

yes, take martial arts. I only was taught the mish-mash they teach marines, and i am not belted, but I have never been unable to take care of myself.
I've been attacked a couple times in civillian life, these attacks never lasted more than a few seconds (luckily). The problem is that all the things i was taught are GREAT
for breaking bones and causing serious injury, but I'm not interested in doing that to people.
All that aside, it's my beleif that the study of martial arts will make you a better person overall.
Also study the Tao Te CHing:

http://academic.brooklyn.cuny.edu/core9/phalsall/texts/taote-v3.html

It is very complimentary philosophy to the mental discipline you'll be developing.

yes i agree with you you..

it can over all make you a better person..if you let it.

i dont like to hurt people...i dont even like to fight...

dont get it twisted though , i will fight .. but i try my best to avoid it if i can..

now competeing is another thing...

if you step out on the mat with me...you will get my all....controled of course

im not out to kill anyone....

and i hope i get your all also.....

im all for competition....im just not into straight violence....beating the hell out of someone just cuz you can...

if i get in a fight...i dont want to beat the hell out the guy...i dont want the fight in the fisrt place...

but i will take your legs out and summit and restrain you untill you cool the fuck off...;-)

Grappling (wrestling, GJJ), Boxing. Competed in submission grappling but my hands gave out before my advancing age and lack of skill could end my mma career before it started. Starting a sport when most people are retiring adds difficulty points. I did some competing and training in the states.

I was the only sparring partner for one of our national pro boxing champs for 4 years (he fought on Thomas Hearn's team when he first went pro) - I was really more of a movable punching bag (see artist's interpretation below). I hit him twice in 4 years: he let me hit him once and the second wouldn't have scored. Like fighting a ghost swinging a bag of hammers, I literally would have done better playing Michael Jordan one on one every day for 4 years. One of my grappling friends came to watch us train one day and he was horrified, he said that he lost track of how many times I got hit in the head at 150 in the first round. Seriously, literally.

My friend's amateur coach ran the practice my first day of boxing and the only advice he gave me, after a row of amateur scrubs had me bloody from hair to shorts, was "Try not to get hit so much." He came in to our last training before my friend went to the states for his last fight, between rounds he's giving me some water and stops, looks and me, and says "You're going to get brain damage." LOL! Almost the only two full sentences the legend said to me in 4 years, and he was the one who hooked me up with the champ for sparring after my 2nd day boxing.

OH THE HUMANITY!

I taught a TKD 2nd BB some grappling in exchange for take down practice - he could kick me as hard as he wanted and I would take him down. He didn't land a kick over 3 or 4 sessions and he couldn't take getting slammed on his back from a 5 foot drop more than a few times a session - if I'm going to let someone kick me I reserve the right to knock the breath out of him.

TKD is a fantastic sport (exciting, fun) but if you want self defense with kicking go to mauy thai - TKD masters 1 range (kicking) where Mau Thai focuses on 3 ranges (kicking, punching, clinch).

how did your hands go out??

did you hurt them or something , or do you just got lack of speed..

if speed is a problem their are sevreal exercises you can do to build your speed up..

i like to isometric exercises when i speed train...

i will hold 25lbs dumbells and do slow moveing punches and jabs...

i will also use resistance bands for my legs when i work on kicks..

but their are several different exercises

i will sometimes switch it up and go from isometric to just time trainning..

where i`ll wait for a whistle or something and do a single punch , jab , or kick at a time while focusing on a specipic target..

your never to old...i`ll be 33 in august..

we get people in their 40`s and up to come..

some are really slow but have gotten better and faster after few mounths of traing..

while others are just fast....

no matter what it is you do , you will always advance as long as you make a valid effort...

it might not always be easy , but the reward at the end is bliss......:peace:

"how did your hands go out?? did you hurt them or something"

Bone growth in the knuckle joints, they swell when I hit someone. I had to switch from regular to southpaw by the 5th or 6th round, couldn't land a jab anymore.

"or do you just got lack of speed..if speed is a problem their are sevreal exercises you can do to build your speed up.."

It's not JUST lack of speed, but there is definitely a lack of speed. There are no exercises that will make a slow twitch person like me world class fast. I've done plyometrics for years for jumping for basketball, it helps but will only provide limited improvement. I've played ball with NBA players, I've boxed with world class pros, I've wrestled with olympic hopefulls - if the natural athletic ability isn't there skill and practice will only take one so far.

"i will hold 25lbs dumbells and do slow moveing punches and jabs..."

Why?

"i will also use resistance bands for my legs when i work on kicks.."

Simplify man!

"your never to old...i`ll be 33 in august.. we get people in their 40`s and up to come.."

Even Randy Cotoure will retire someday. I started when I was older than you.

Keep at it, you sound like you love it and that's fantastic!!!

No official schooling or anything but my roommate got his blackbelt in hap ki do when he was younger. That and I watch an ass load of martial arts movies.

Constantly trying to stay on routine workouts and get lessons on the side from my roommate. I have the luxury of having a hight adjustable standup heavy bag, speedbag, trampoline, weight bench/curl bar/dumbbells/etc, and leg weights. It's like a mini gym at my house now. So when the time does eventually come I will be prepared to defend myself in a tight spot, and get a rockin body in the process :)

nothin better than gettin a shower and a good bong rip after a heavy workout though!

side note: If you guys are also interested in martial arts movies check out anything with Tony Ja in it. Especially Ong Bak 1 & 2 and The Protector. Tony is from thailand himself and employs the thai style very well. Up and coming martial arts movie star!

Bruce Lee story I had verified from one of LeBell's students

.

Lee was pretty good at sparring, that and his legend level at the movie set made him undefeated against the asian extras in fights while not filming. One day he was being particularly brutal with his beatings and one of the Yank extras, Jean LeBell, took exception to it. He walked up to Lee between fights and said that he'd fight Lee if Lee were up to it.

LeBell grabs Lee, tosses him on his ass and strangles him unconscious with the judo version of a rear naked choke. Seconds, no effort.

LeBell turns around and picks up his stuff, goes home. Figures that he'll never work in movies again. Door bell rings, it's Bruce Lee to apologize for being an ass and to ask LeBell to come back to work. And if he'd teach Lee throws and ground work. Lee had written about expanding his game before his death.

I respect that show of character more than the legend he made for himself in the movies.

when i use the dumbells for my slow movements it works on my my fast twitch muscles in my shoulders...

the resistance the dumbells provide for me allows my muscles to react quicker..

if my muscles adapts to havein 25lbs constantly working on them..for me means the quicker they will respond when they feel 25lbs lighter...

the resistance bands i use for the same pourpuse for my kicks since i caint put dumbells on them..

and ankle weights would eventully take a toll on my joints the constant jerking and shit....i hope you understand what im trying to say their...

i will use ankle weights to do slow leg raises..like i will stand in a fighting stance and slowly throw a round kick as slow as i can before my balance goes to wack..

yes everyone will retire sometime.

but you dont got to be a pro fighter to enjoy the health benifits from martial arts..

i know everyone has their limits..

but i also beleive anyone can make some type of progress in what their doing with pratice..even just a little

and yes i do love it...and i will continue to pratice as long as my body will allow..

i just hope my kids grow up loveing it as much as i do....but i let them make their own choices...

you sound like you are a pretty good fighter.

it would be awsome to spar witcha....:-P.....:peace:

i dont know what i did to make my letters go bold like this.....sorry

I was never interested in the health benefits, I just LOVE to fight/compete. My favorite and worst sport is boxing - I would have headaches that lasted weeks, my sparring partner figured out fast just how close to death he could beat me and still have me come back to train the next day. When you're competing a sparring partner is your most valuable asset - if you break your toys you have nothing to play with.

When sparring everything else disappears, peace. The peace of training and the promise of competition were all I was interested in, health and self defense were never a concern - except for the destructive nature of training for competition.

i was refering to the health benefits for the elders out ther...;-)

i also love intense training work outs , and the competition...

i love the battle..i just dont like to do it out on the streets..

man iv been through some sparring partners over the years..

i like working out and sparring and trying to see who can come up with the most devastateing attacks..

free sparring is good its its own way , keeps your techniques clean..

the only thing is if your always sparring with someone that is not as good as you then you caint advance or you advance really slowly..

to where if your sparring against someone equal to or more advance then your are then your sparring skills sharpin up that much quicker......:peace:

Ive been practicing Jeet kune Do since '99, a very fluid style developed by Bruce Lee himself.
probably the single best desicion ive ever made in my entire life, was to follow the way....
i really enjoy JKD, because not unlike MMA, it takes the best of everything, and truly allows a person to develop there own personal techniques, whereas in Karate, Kung Fu, and most other disciplines, the forms/katas are very strict and rigid, and incorporating other styles and 'moves' into those forms is really discouraged.
with JKD, I can incorporate both Dragon and Tiger styles and be lauded for it, instead of ostracized.
martial arts are a great thing, in any way shape or form. its amazing the peace you get, by learning to fight. took me awhile to understand that part... but worth it!

i dont beleive that their is any one style better then the other...

i beleive its the person behind the style that makes the difference..

regardless of what style a person has they will always have an upper hand in a fight against a regular street fighter as long as they know how to apply it...

when it comes to katas and forms..you dont use them in a fight.. you show them off in competetions and for belt test to show proper technique and discipline....

im all for any stlye of martial arts..the more you learn the more of a well rounded fighter you become...;-)

thats just my 2 cents.....:peace:

This is the most impressive move I've seen in MMA. It may not seem like much but to be double underhooked and picked up off the ground by a wrestler of Lindland's quality and still get the reversal and land on top is amazing. Fedor looks like the Pillsbury Dough boy, so deceiving. Amazing to watch.
