im thinking of using three 100 watt soft whites for one plant

not sure but i just picked up some cfl at the local hardware store on sale for 2.99 each . i am not use them to grow but i suppose you could . I actually have one over a coffee can dwc setup just for kicks in my computer room to see if it will sprout up and take off . the cfl can be had at 5700 ish which is a more blue light then soft whites . All this info is worth only what you paid for it as i am super noob when it comes to growing anything . i think the soft whites have more of a 2500 red light to them ?
 
ah good CFL's to grow with then...the higher the actual the farther it penetrates...3 of those should be PLENTY for 1 plant...you could probably do two as well no probs...just keep em within a couple inches and use the oscillating fan to increase stem strength and move the heat :)

Now those bulbs are best for the flowering stage as its around 2700k, yes you can use them for the veg stage, but they are not as effective. I would pickup two "Daylight" bulbs that should be in the 6500K range that you need for the veg cycle...use those two + one of your soft white's for veg, then swap out one of the daylights for a soft white for flowering. Its good to have a mixture of spectrum as the plant needs it all during all periods, it just uses more of the specific ranges during those specific stages.

Pretty much the only way us po folk grow :D but I do have to say that since upgrading to some cheap($35/each) 150watt HPS lamps its a whole new world...picked them up from a surplus place cheap :D
