In-Line Fan/Blower Muffling/Noise Reduction

Just got a new 6 inch in-line blower and it sounds like a jet engine (so much for the "quietness' they advertise. I've tried to come up with a couple of ideas on how to reduce the noise. I've thought about placing the fan inside a small 10 gallon storage bin, then placing that bin in a larger 30 gallon bin and placing crumpled newspaper or something between them. Then I'll just cut side holes to run the ducting through. Any other ideas or tried/true methods?

Im not too sure bout this myself, theoretically speakings (dont think thats spell correctly)
Trying to build a box made from particle board not plywood, sealing that box with some silicone then mounting a blower fan with rubber gromets (feeting) to a cut 2x4 plank so that the plank fits inside the box and lifts the fan about an inch to an inch and a half off the box floor and then filling the box with some type of noise suppresent (ie pillow/fibreglass/spray foam)
what does everyone think?

Everything i say is for entertainment/recreational purposes only and I am fully aware of all laws and do by abide by them.

What I did was get some insulation to wrap around the fan. I used five inch framing insulation that is 16" wide and on a 24' roll. About 12$ at Lowes. I only used about 8' of it but I suppose you could use it all. Rig an exhaust extension where the surround is open insulation. It made the sound acceptable.

I now wish I had gotten insulated ducting as it would also be quieter. I am moving 440 cfm and that is noisy without the fan noise.

Try to hang the fan from a bungie cord as that will insulate the sound from being transmitted through the framing.

well a booster(duct) fan is supposed to be between two pieces of duct which would make them pretty silent. If you're using it to draw air in then its going to create a lot of noise. If you're using it to draw air out then put it in a box with a hole at the top and it will become virtually silent.

I would build a baffle system at the outlet also. Thats where all that sound from the fan goes to. And if you vent outside you see the problem. Your broadcasting that noise to the whole hood. I have centifugal fans and they are extremely quiet.

I am also looking for a way to quiet my inline fan system. my idea is similar to a silencer on a gun... maybe a coffee can between it and the grow box?
