Hey guys what's up, since I'm growing three regular seeds Indoor, and I'm a rookie on this, I would like to get some advise in such things as:

- An ok quality soil
(How to do the mix of the compose)
- Fertilizers

- Lights(if possible, an alternative to HID and HPS due to a low budget) ( Distance from lights to plants)

- Pots( sizes, same for all stages?)

Any other important stuff?

Thanks a lot.

Read up on growing with compact fluorescent lights, a very cheap yet efficient alternative.
Look into buying some foxfarm soil either happy frog or better yet ocean forest. Get some Perlite also to improve soil drainage.
Get a large pot for each plant up to 5 gallon. And start your seedlings in a plastic party cup with holes in the bottom for drainage. You'll need to choose and purchase your basic two nutrients for growing...a Grow nute for vegetative stage and a Bloom nute for flowering.

Need more info bud. Size of growing space, expected yield, etc. and Fox Farms is top of the line. Kinda pricey for soil but I hear it's worth it. I would have it myself if it was around where I live.

Whats up! first off whats your budget?

Because based on that we can asses your capabilities.

First question when it comes to soil id stick with promix (the green bag) found at most gardening stores for about $10 for 3 cubic feet.

no need to add anything to that.

Second off id get some fox farm nutrients. theyre simple and decently cheap

Now for the lights. youd end up spendin the same amount of money on 6 cfls a power strip some Y plug adapter as you would for a cheap all in one hps system.

heres one for 65 bucks, get it with the cooling flange for another 5 and its an even 70

Now for pots id get some plain old square pots nothin fancy about 1 gallon in size maybe a little less these are ok

other important stuff may include thermometer, ducting, fans, and a grow space.

Where do you plan on growing? closet? room? garage?

i use fox farm ocean forest and its a pretty good mix, grab a small bag of pro mix and do 50/50 pro mix/FFOF for your starter cups as it can be a little too high in nutes for some seedlings. then 100% FFOF when you transplant into bigge rpot.

CFL are great but not aleways cheaper than a HID, if your growing a few decent sized plants your going to spend a bunch of money on decent wattage bulbs, or have 100 13watters.

i seen on craigslist today someone selling 400w HID lights with bulb/ballast and reflective collar for 35 bucks each (they came out of a warehouse probabally) they arent the cream of the crop aircooled hood and lumatek ballast but they are made to last and a HPS is a HPS

@pandrilby where do you live. Im sure you can order foxfarm soil from like walmart or something. @bud if you don't have alot of money I would go with a cheap but decent soil im using MG potting mix and its pretty good although I had a prob with fungus gnat but its all good now, you can use cfl's keep them close to the plant tho I would recommend a combo cfl's and an HPS system you can get them for pretty cheap just shop around, also your space will depend on how many plants you can safely grow. You'll need a fairly good sized pot well maybe somewhere around 3 to 5 gal. if your growing 3 plants im sure you already know to lookout for males unless there fem seeds, if you want seed then keep the males and pollenate the ladies with them.

Good Lord, you sound Like me.
Questions to answer before you do anything:
1. What are your expected outcomes?
2. What's your budget?
3. What's your space?
4. I always ask this when there are big budget constraints....do you live alone? Does everyone living with you know your plans?
5. What are your plans for ventilation and odor control?
You won't need nutes for 3 weeks into the grow, so do more research.
6. Got a plan for pest control?

Add these questions to Bud's.....we're here to help and save time.
You should be here to learn and have fun.

Hey guys, the max I could spend for now is 200, the size of the room is about 33 sq-ft, it's basically a walk-in closet, the house has central ac so the closet is always flooded with tons of fresh air, I can also place in there a small fan in order to ventilate the room, but i don't think it is necessary, and yes, I live by my self.
In the very beginning I was thinking of doing a DWC but then I realized how hard it was, and taking care of mary and attending college are not synonyms lol, therefore I sticked to soil.
Pest control? wait, what? :O

Thanks to everyone for replying and also for the info.

Heres a list of stuff that will be exactly what you wanna start with.

150 watt hps all in one. very handy with little heat.

hpslist.JPG

Make sure you get it with a timer, cooling flange, and rope ratchet hangers (as shown below)

hps list2.JPG

The rest of your shopping cart should include these

list1 (2).jpg
list2.JPG
list 4.JPG

For a grand total of $211

Note: If you buy promix in stores the shipping would be about $7 cheaper.

Is that close enough to $200?? haha

all this can be found at htgsupply.com

This is basically my first grow set up ive ever had and it was the perfect amount of power and ease so id highly recommend it to anyone starting out.

A nice 5 plant SOG/ScrOG would give you a solid oz or 2 depending on veg time/method.

Good luck to ya!

I just drove 550 miles and there are things yet to be addressed....plywood floor with waterproof covering and venting the odor. I'll reread the posts when I'm not as tired.

Mylar covered foamboard insulation is an option.;-)
Yes it is. Usually the last thing many closet growers think about is protecting the floor from stains and spills, but it has to be addressed...BTW are you a rentor? If so, what's the contingency for unexpected visits from pest control or a landlord? Just asking because it could come up.

Wow, you really got me in that one, yes I am a rentor, but is he allowed to come in without permission? He lives in another state, and the plants will be on a second floor, no pest control will come unless I ask for it.

Been away from the puter....yeah, landlords have rights.....be aware and be careful!! What we say may not always be totally correct, but we will make you think :)
