Is 1 foot of vertical space enough (SCROG)?

The interior height of my grow cabinet is 28.5". A 5 gallon bucket (DWC) is 14.5" high, plus space for my 150 watt HPS (2"). Leaving me with roughly 12" of actual vertical space for plant growth.

Is it enough space?

I also have the option of a much shorter container, but with comes the complications that go along with small reservoirs like like PH instability and filling more often.

Thoughts?

No its not enough for an hid you won't even be able to grow a 1" sprout in there you will need 18" between the light and the plant, 150w you might be able to go as close as 12". I would suggest you go with led lights or cfl but make sure it's an actual grow light, even still you should expect less than an oz per plant at 12".

No I would not suggest a shorter container either for the exact reason that you said.

Wow - 12" is very limited.
I've been known to do a closet scrog in soil using buckets & I like vegging a bit so in the end the canopy is just short of chest high on me (and I'm over 6' tall).

No its not enough. Get a better space you gonna need 7-10 feet for a legit grow.

If 28.5" is all the head room you have, you'll need to make serious changes to your grow setup to make it work. Your 5 gal res takes up too much space, your head room isn't much different than what a PC grower has to deal with so I'd check out some of those grow journals to better refine your setup.

I'd rather deal with having to maintain a smaller reservoir more often than dedicating half my available grow height to the res.

Have you considered soil instead of Hydro? A lot easier to deal with in a small setup.

Nd dwc? PSH your plant will grow those 12 inches in 2 days before you even catch it to make it into the scrog

Make a reservoir with a Sterilite flat box. The long flat rectangle things. The roots can spread sideways just like they can hang. Use the 150-watt HPS and experiment. Deal with the issues of smaller res' like you and BDOGKush said.

Paint that bitch or cover it somehow to keep the light out.
