Some of us do indeed keep the originals around, travel the world and support collection of them in situ. Real, true Colombian Gold's and Pure Equatorials can and do take well over 20 weeks in flower, there is a very limited market for such pure, untouched real things.
Hence why we selectively create hybrids from them, to suit more modern conditions. We release both the pure lines and selected hybrids that capture their essence in F1 and beyond forms.
Most hybrids, are nothing more than hybrids of hybrids selectively bred in closets rom minimal seed numbers and bred for high fertiliser resistances (LOL!) and therefore there is no wonder they are barely recognisable for any of the original traits.
You cannot select pure Sativa's indoors and in selection of landraces you need a lot of seed and experience with a line to be able to identfy true elites. Of course, this is work most modern breeders do not even consider, as it is far easier to get a clone, cross it and sell you the seed, or even easier, make S1's of in demand clones. There is little, to none real breeding being done out there.
However it does not need to be that way. You can find F1 Pure Colombians (GoldBud) that take 25 weeks in flower, Hybrids to Indicas highly selected to not taint the pure Sativa experiences and selected from relatively huge numbers outdoors. Along with many other 'real' things if you look hard enough.
Not much has been lost, it is just well hidden and in the hands of only a few who really care.
Peace, HHF
