i have 5 baby plants right now. the oldest is about 2 weeks old. they're all under 3-4 inches. for the 5 plants, i'm using 4 26W CFL's (app. 100W each). is that too little light? if not, how long would this be good for? also, if i decide to get an hps light, what kind of fixtures do they use? regular ones?

Sounds okay for now. When they get bigger they will need more light though. You need a ballast to run a hps. Some lower wattage hps bulbs might screw into a regular household socket, but DO NOT TRY THIS!!!! It's will cause problems. You need a hps ballast to run a hps bulb.

how many watts of hps light do you need for approximately 5 plants, if you want to use one light from start to finish?

You could use a 430 watt son agro, they are good for using one light from start to finish, they have 30% more blue for veg and they are great for flowering also 53000 initial lumens. You could do 5 plants nicely under one....:joint:
