I grew up wanting to get high with Jack! His book and research really lit a fire under me and I never thought I would not only go on to get high with him but name a strain after him and smoke it as well as bubble with him and get my picture taken with him Published but It happened. I'd like to thank MzJill who took the picture of me lighting some full melt for Jack, these pics are credited to me many times but both my hands are visible in the pictures . I wasn't some great friend of the mans but I did hang with him on several occasions and I cherish those moments, not everyone gets to be that close to their inspiration.

This story however is not about Jack the man but the plant itself and my observations on growing it. I grew it before about 9 years ago from seed and I was able to find one really nice female out of ten seeds and I grew it for many cycles before I replaced it with something better. Over the years I have smoked lots of different samples of Jack Herer including one really nice bud I bought from Green House during my first trip to Amsterdam in 1996. Many grower hold a coveted Herer cutting so I have seen many of the different variations of the strain from seed. The one I am most familiar with was fruity and hazy with a nice yield and strong stone combined with a head high. I have also smoked a haze dominant cut that a good friend grew out for a few years in the late 90's.
After Jack passed last year he was on everyone's minds and I made a trip to his famous shop in Portland called "The Third Eye". I love there glass selection and a few of the people working there hold cards and grow TGA gear. I went upstairs after signing a few books downstairs and a dude I had never met before followed me up I kind figured it was Mark Herer Jacks son. He confirmed it by introducing himself and asking if I was Subcool? I told him I was and he then ask if I could get him a pack of his dads seeds. I told him that anyone could order a pack online but I also explained about growing from seed and selection and suggested he instead look for a nice cutting. He kind of gave me a confused look and I explained that I would get him a cutting and and he smiled and said thanks. Now I took this pretty much like Jack asking me himself so I went directly to work looking for the best possible cutting to fill this request.
A good friend of Dioxides who is an amazing grower that I respect very much stepped up and offered up a cutting of his prized Jack Herer cutting. It was passed from legal grower to legal grower until it made its way to me and then to Mark this is the report on that cutting from my growing perspective. I'd like to thank this talented grower for selfishly sharing one of his prize cuttings.
The cutting came to me very healthy and looking great but I still dipped the clone in Mitecide as well as treated it for mildew using a fungastat. Once the plant recovered we took a few cuttings and rooted them.

I sent one to Mark Herer and I kept the other growing it out as I would any cutting from this point on. I did not document the growth each week as I normally do waiting instead until I saw and smelled something promising. The plant shot up fast once flowering started and at first it looked kind of tall and thin. As time passed though the buds started swelling and the resin started flowing and one day while watering the garden I brushed up against the plant and got a huge wiff of Lemons and wintergreen. It was very pungent and immediately got my attention. At 5 foot tall with 6 heads it wasn't easy to move around so I had to wait till the plant was almost done before dragging out of the CO2 enriched bud room into the finishing area. It was only then I started seeing how special this cutting was. Stacked resin head and a strong lemon and mint smell make for a notable smell similar to my Jacks Cleaner but sweeter without the sandlewood smell. Instead this is replaced with the Mint or Winter green smell.

Thats is pretty cool that you got to meet and smoke with the great Jack Herer. I am truly envious. I have to say some of the best bud I've ever smoked was some jack herer ordered from M-O-M. I smoked a .5 between two friends and myself. I didnt expect to get so high cause of tolerance and lack of substance, but I was wrong. I was more high than I had imagined by the 3rd time the joint got to me. The taste and smell was impeccable!

Thanks for sharing :D

Just after a photo shoot of the almost mature colas I was invited out to the farm where the cutting came from. I got to tour an amazing garden that provides meds for several people and there very lucky patients in my opinion as this cat is a very skilled grower. In between the 10 main plants that are planted into the ground he is using the empty space for many Jack Herer plants that will be moved to a second tunnel very soon. I thought it was a smart use of the garden but soon air flow for the in ground plants will be very important so they were busy working on the second area. It was really cool to see the cutting under full sun both in pots and even one in ground.

In my opinion you are the true King Of Cannabis

Not only are you at the top of the game but yet you arent conceded like other Cannabis Royalty.

I never see any other Elite breeders spend so much time teaching and explaining breeding and growing methods of not just there own gear but any gear for that matter.

Keep up the dope shit

Sub,

I was able to sample some Jack Herer and I have to say I was quite impressed! So impressed that I now want to grow this strain. I will talk to the employee's at the dispensary I went to and see if I can get a cutting. But if not which breeder would you recommend for seeds? I was thinking either sensi seeds, white label or bc bud depot? Which would you recommend?

Hell I did not even know he was from Portland Oregon. I just visited the tye dye stores website which he owned. If you go to the stores myspace site there is a few videos of Jack going on about hemp and how it can save the planet. I need to pickup his book someday and read it.

Great thread Subcool. I grew a round of Jack H after he passed in memory.

My crew grows a Jack cutting from Oregon. It came down here with Illumanati and The Don. Are you familiar with that crew? Anyways, this Jack flowers in 55 days so I was thinking it is a cross. It also stays shorter and is extremely stable/consistent ime. This Jack has been around for over 10 years.... could it be your cleaner?

PS. It makes great hash!

Matt here is the story of my Jack's Cleaner.
I have smoked enough pure Jack Herer to know that the male used in the creation had a heavy JH influence but the JCf1 is a more complex stone I feel from the pluton and haze influences the high has more body but the lemon taste is very much a dominant trait with JCf1. The JCf1 cutting has certainly been around that long and other people do have the cutting or it would have been lost during my stay behind steel bars. JCf1 is known for stretching 3X the first 21 days of budding and shooting out late term male stamens due to the age of the cutting some 15 years old now. This trait however cycles and every other harvest she will run free and yield huge qualities of lemon magic.

Jacks Cleaner Myth or Legend

You may not have heard of the strain Jacks Cleaner, but among collectors of Elite genetics it has become somewhat of an urban legend. This is due to a few factors. The first is I grew it for many years before other respected growers tried it and let me know it was probably the best Sativa Hybrid in existence. In 1997 I had a gathering known in breeder circles as “Jamaica 1” several respected under ground breeder/growers met at my place and we spent 3 days toking testing talking and feasting on BBQ and southern food. We had a un official judging and JC won every first place vote. Now maybe the guys were just being nice because I tossed the gig but I knew at least I had found a great strain. But where did it come from?
I got my first PC in about 1994 it was an Acer 133 and soon found a great deal of information on Cannabis, certainly not anything like today but it led me to grow chats where I met others that shared an interest for growing. One of the first I became close online friends with was a guy with the nick ‘Skoosh’. I was amazed that there was another seriously hard working tax paying Loyal American that waked and baked everyday of his adult life. We swapped stories online, toked while we typed and found out we both love ice cream. He offered me some seeds and over time traded around what we each had. He sent me about 200 seeds of a old strain called Skoosh that was pretty infamous in his circles and I started cracking large treys looking for a keeper. The make up of these seeds were Pluton, Lambs bread, Purple Haze, and Northern Lights. What mix or pattern these crosses occurred I am not sure. Most of what I found was not impressive, super thin spindly sativa’s and mutants with whorled leaves. I did find a few that seemed normal and grew them to maturity. Of all the seeds I started over a period of a year one phenotype stood out. It was a extremely resinous ultra lemon wonder. It reminded me of a house hold cleaner named “Mr Clean” So I named it “The Cleaner”. It had one poor trait and that was weak stems and smaller size. I had not yet read botany and we all thought breeders were smarter than god so it was just luck I had a Jack Herer male from Sensi Seeds that I was to lazy to kill and just placed in a dark garage. It refused to die so I placed a small 12” Cleaner clone with him and she produced about 35 seeds.
From these I selected the best female and tossed all the males. From these was the Phenotype many now consider to be the holy grail of Cannabis, Jacks Cleaner is a large heavy producer with ultra white raised trichomes that actually give the plant a gooey appearance. Heavy citrus with over bearing lemon smell and taste I have yet to see anything like it. In 2003 we out crossed the P1 mother with a JC X blueberry offspring and created JC bx. This first stage back cross recently won third place in the 420 cup in Amsterdam by a grower named HOG. It had a 12 day cure and blew everyone away as he was an unknown in there neck of the woods. There is some confusion cause many that have the JC bx misstate the fact and say they have JC leaving off the BX indicating a back cross.
This year I started Space Queen by Vic a hybrid cross of Cindy-99 and Romulan. I never considered it something impressive but it has blown Jill and I away. It is extremely potent fast maturing and just an amazing flavor. Pineapples and mangos with a candy like fragrance it has become our stash smoke. We have now decided to cross the JC P1 with the best Space Queen male we found.. Many would argue you need thousands of plants to start with for selecting to be considered a ‘True Breeder” but I think 30 years of growing and a keen eye for recessive traits can compensate starting from a smaller gene pool and the feed back from our medical users backs up my theory.

You can see by the photo’s that JC is not a normal hemp dominant plant. Just the speed of resin production makes her somewhat of a freak .You can see how the large raised resin heads give some shots a glass effect. I will attempt to describe toking JC from a clean bong, the smoke is crisp and thick with a heavy lemon oiliness that seems to coat the sinuses with citrus, it is a bit harsh and tends to make me wince, then the expansion starts and if you took a small enough hit and don’t cough the buzz is instant. At first the buzz is visual and very cerebral. Then the other side starts creeping and you feel as if you smoked some heavy indica. The munchies come on and after you eat plates full of bizarre food combinations you are ready for a nap. Once you are used to the high it has amazing analgesic properties and a good friend said it even made him last longer with his GF due to it’s pain relieving aspects.

I expect Simon and Nevil would disagree with each other and that is no surprise. Nevil's version of the story is that the original Jack Herer cutting entered by Sensi Seeds uses the same parent's as Mr Nice's Super Silver Haze (Haze C X Skunk #1) X (Haze C X NL#5). I have not grown either so I can't say much about yield but I have had the pleasure of smoking Mr Nice SSH and it was similar to what sub described as Jack Herer. Sweet and maybe minty, powerful cerebral stone, although I hear there are catpiss phenos.

Belay my last...............

Sensi are the ones according to Sub.
Mr. Soul said he bought his JH, that he found Princess/Cinderella in, from Sensi Smile coffeeshop in Amsterdam.
Are/were they owned by the same ppl ?
Curious for the purpose of history if anyone knows.
