Jurupa Valley has redoubled efforts to rid itself of marijuana dispensaries, sending cease-and-desist letters to nearly two dozen dispensaries officials they thinkare operating and to landlords believed to be renting space to dispensary operators.
The letters sent via Fed-Ex on July 31 and Aug. 1 give recipients five days to prove the dispensary has shut down or face possible court action.
We want the dispensaries out of the city, Jurupa Valley Mayor Verne Lauritzen said Tuesday, Aug. 6. We want a clear message to be sent so there is no misunderstanding.
City officials sent the dispensaries letters in September 2011 telling them they needed to close.
With the citys hard-line stance strengthened by a favorable California Supreme Court ruling that cities and counties can use zoning laws to ban dispensaries, city officials decided to send another letter.
Landlords who received the letters could not be reached for comment Tuesday.
A visit to several of the dispensaries scattered throughout the city showed that some had closed, while others remained open.
