Kush on the COB: Growing Dank OG with Cree CXB

Hi all, this will be my grow/build journal. I would call myself an advanced noobie grower, and I hope you stick around to learn with me bongsmilie

very recent background (skim the pictures first maybe): I started growing in july of 2015 and decided to go with LED lighting after considering the cost of electricity in LA. After my initial (rushed) research I bought a 450w growblu blurple led for $750. But after a couple weeks of further research and digging up clues on efficiency, thankfully finding the led section of riu and greengenes live hangouts he was holding back then, I decided to return the growblu. I ate $100 on the return fees and waited a couple months for four a51 w90's... best decision ever. But it took me a minute to realize 360watts from vero 29's would be superior to 450w of blurple.

I started my first grow in October 2015 in a 4x4 gorilla tent with 3 clones by nameless genetics from the w.e.e.d. studio city and ran most of flower with 6 w90's, ending it partly by running my first build, cxb3590 x 6 at 1050ma. Unfortunately the little one hermied, but I still ended up with about 350g of frosty nug from the two plants under about 530watts dissipation, which would have easily been 450g with the third clone plus a lot of popcorn that went to the hash bag. This exceeded my expectations for my first ever grow.

Now to present day, I am just starting my second round ever after recently completing my second build which brings my setup to (14) cxb3590 at 1050ma covering my 4x4 tent. With an additional a51 w90 3000k my ppfd should be at least 1000. As far as genetics, I put OG in the title for a reason. I've grown up on og kush having been to LA dispensaries for the last 6 years; it's always been my favorite high and terp profile so now that I'm growing my own I just want to fill my whole tent with dank og. I settled with some Tahoe OG clones from a genetics nursery in LA. I'm happy with where they are going into flower, except that 1 of the 5 tahoe's seems to be a totally different cut, and the single gg4 they shot me for free fell over in veg and barely made it through.

I have pretty high hopes for this run and think I can easily reach 600 to 700 grams if the genetics are on point. I'm down to discuss all aspects of cannabis cultivation in this thread, as I've got plans to expand soon and lots of ideas. I'm running coco, 3 gal pots and hand watering multiple times per day. I already know that I will be upgrading to a 4x8 setup this summer, with 18 more cxb3590's, and 2 gal pots w/ coco and drip watering. Also, clones of the josh d og that are supposed to be released soon and I'll probably do whatever I need to get those

This will be my first journal post I guess. Sunday March 13th was Day 1 of Flower, and I just cropped the 4 lanky tahoe's for hopefully the last time, with the cob's about 18-20" from the canopy and only 8" of breathing room above that (i have other fallbacks, tent height extension or lowering the floor). I put the girls under the 14 cxb's about two weeks ago and the 4 tahoe's did not enjoy the intensity at 15-20" but the other 2 plants were fine. I think they're finally past all signs of stress from a rough veg and are blowing up with the multiple feedings per day. I'm running heavy16 and experimenting with some additives and beneficials.

stunted gg4 on the front left, stocky hybrid looking tahoe og in the front middle, and the other 4 are lanky legit looking tahoe og

cheers :leaf:

Have you considered blumats? Should make life easy wrt watering.
yeah a little bit but not enough. I know I will be switching next round to automatic watering but I haven't decided between blumats or drip/spray irrigation, though from what I've seen drip/spray is used more commonly.

Is that one of the Tahoe pheno's? The short one? Lol thats funny. Nice grow, Canopy control for sure!
yeah I really don't know what the short ones are. the left short one was labeled gg4 but its stretchier than it looks and got really stunted b/c i broke the stalk but easily could be some s1 hybrid or something, and the middle was labeled tahoe og but has just grown stocky like that the whole time, clearly some hybrid. im really happy with the tall/lanky ones, that's the kind of genetic that will fill the whole canopy in the future. thanks for stopping by dude

whattup man, thanks for the words. nope no fans, at 1050ma you theoretically only need a ~6.5" length cut of the 5.88" profile from heatsinksusa to passively cool (according to the great @bggrass diy cob calculator). these are a combination of 7" and 7.5" length sinks and they're definitely enough. future i'm looking to anodized cylinder sinks if the price is right.

thanks man, yeah im goin back n fourth on the heatsinks.the round looks good but with all the flat builds i see they look much easier to assemble together into a fixture

feel that, the flat ones make complete sense for my build but i just wish they were a little less expensive than about $13 per sink.

man, that tent is gonna blow up! excellent canopy management!
thanks man, yeah i cant wait to see how it develops.

Nice Set-up Bro ! looks Great
the girlz look healthy as fooock
ain't it killer to have that Quality done by yourself

Just a suggestion on the pot liners ;
find square &/or rectangular drain tubs life will be betta
'The Container' stores & some of the dollar stores , have the tubs in the home area , low prices & huge asortm, ent of sizes of those clear tubs that they sell to OCD people to store their socks & shit in . some are as deep as 3-4" in flat large sizes that easy fit any indoor pots
I find they have that ridge on the lip that makes for easy grabbing a tray full of drain water plus the steeper side hold more water
they double as nice soil storage bins

Nice light, skills and coco... I'm tagged in. What nutrients are you running with those beauties?
thanks bro. using heavy 16, i get it for really cheap at one of my local hydro stores. i like how ph stable it is, has a high amount of cal/mag in the base, the full line is relatively minimalistic and it works perfectly with RO water and coco. i think in the future i'll probably move to hydroponics research veg/bloom to reduce costs.

hell yeah thanks. it feels damn good, even better that these girls were looking a lot weaker for a solid few weeks during veg and bounced back so well. thanks for the suggestion on drainage, i've wondered where to get something like that but wasn't sure. i was also thinking that getting a whole 4x4 drainage tray/table for the next round might be the best.

I've run veg + bloom since I started coco. I'm a fan of it in flower for sure...

So I ran into a pretty bad spider mite issue in week 3 of flower, the little fuckers. My noob self didn't notice them until there was webbing throughout most of the canopy.

Week 3 day 18: you can make out some webbing on the serrations in this pic and leaf damage, I didn't even notice it at this point.IMG_20160331_050705.jpg

Week 4 Day 27: I had to spray a few times with sm 90 and mighty wash to keep the mites under control, this didn't help the flowers. burnt a lot of pistils, lost some smell. I released two types of predatory mites last week and stopped spraying and I'm hoping the girls can recover to near full strength. At first I thought my plants were probably lost, now I'm confident these predators will get rid of the problem. Girls are probably about a 7.5/10 now health-wise when they were 10/10 before the infestation, but seem to be recovering every day. Definitely will not get quite the same yield as I would have before but we'll see how it goes.
