Leak Proofing a DIY EZ Cloner.

So for all you out there using DIY aerocloners how do you prevent leaks? The first one I made was out of a roughneck and it leaked like a screen door in a submarine. Now I use a home depot 27-Gal tough box, with foam weather striping around the lid. It still leaks a bit in the center. Has anyone overcome this hurdle? My next plan is to put a 6" curtain around the lid sitting inside the cloner. So instead of the water hitting where the lid and the container meet it will hit the curtain and run back in. I know this will be a headache and a half so +rep to anyone with an easier answer.

Mine is leaking from the same spot but not all the way around only in the center. My weatherstripping may be the problem. What is yours made out of. All I could find at home depot (I really hate that store, I usually try to avoid it like the plauge) was foam weather stripping.

The curtain thing works but I hate having adhesives inside the reservoir.

I got about 10 of those hand clamps from lowes for a buck or so each
and put them around the edges of the lid. This kept things from leaking
for me and my roughneck. Weatherstripping worked for a bit too, but
it eventually turned brittle and didn't suffice anymore.

I don't seem to have that problem. My roughneck has a groove that reflects water before it gets to the joint. I may have to take a pic, but it is waterproof. I believe it is the 18 gallon version?

try raisnig up your sprayers a bit. and what does your sprayer setup look like? I made one out of a rough neck and its never leaked except on the top a bit where i fucked up drillin a hole. I even have 1/4" holes drilled in the side for an airpump to aerate the water. Also try rotating your ezclone sprayers too. if you look how the spray try to focus it away from your problem area.

That is excellent advice.... Just take the thing out back on a warm day and let her spray and you can even be in a swim suit, but make adjustments to your heads to where they are not directing spray towards the edge of the top.

I got that same one, but mine is dark blue. I love how the top is set down about an inch from the edge height. Also inside where the lid snaps on, should be a deep V type ridge that keeps the water from entering the gap from lid to tote. These are the only ones that truly should not leak. It's as if Rubbermaid knows what their totes are being modified for and they have given us waterproofing for aero! YAY Rubbermaid.. :)

I had the same problem at first when I took a 51 gallon rough neck and made a 80 site DIY aero cloner. I fixed the problem by turning the lid upside down. The lid is about 2.5 inched tall so when I turned it upside down it dropped down into the tote and blocked spray and mist from getting to the lip of the tub.

Might help to look at my cloner design in my sig. I have made spray units from just about every tote they sell at Home Depot, Lowes & Big Lots. By far the best tote I have found for leak prevention is the Black and Yellow totes sold at Home Depot (Lowes now makes a knock off)
They have sunken lid designs which help prevent leaks,
Even with the good lids though you still get occassional leaks.
So I add a strip of weather sealent and this is the only thing for me that has completely eliminated all leaks from ALL of my reserviors (I run 18 res in my op.)

The best non leaking device is a cooler with the inner layer cut off with drainage holes drilled into the bottom of the lid seal drop. Impossible to leak in airtight coolers also can keep insulated so if your pump doesnt put out much heat its pretty badass

I had this problem in my aerocloner. I went home for about 4 days and when I came back half of the water was on the floor....
I use a ~16 gal rubbermaid tote.

Simple fix:
Get a few layers of duct tape and line the long sides. (not the ends with the handle).
Don't put it flush, maybe leave a little sticking up to act like weather stripping. _/\_ something like that.
Just get a few layers on there, I used four.

Stopped all leaks like a charm.

good luck brotha
