Lebanese Marihuana Farmers Fight Security Forces

Farmers armed with machineguns, rocket-propelled grenades and mortars forced government troops to abandon an operation to destroy their illegal cannabis crop in Lebanon’s Bekaa Valley on Monday, a witness said.
No casualties were reported in the exchange of fire but two security force vehicles were hit by bullets, the witness said.
During Lebanon’s 1975-1990 civil war, the fertile Bekaa Valley produced up to 1,000 tons of cannabis resin annually and 30 to 50 tons of opium, used to make heroin. The crop was eradicated under a United Nations program between 1991-1993 but it has reemerged as the security forces struggle to control the volatile country. There are no reliable statistics on how much cannabis is produced in Lebanon now.
Security forces run operations to destroy annual marijuana crops but face resistance from angry farmers who see the lucrative and easy-to-grow crop as a way to make money for their impoverished community.
A security source said government forces were regrouping and planning a new operation to destroy the crop

Lebanon: Pot Farmers Injure Two Soldiers In Clash Over Marihuana Crops

Beirut, 3 Aug. (AKI) - Two soldiers were wounded on Friday by a group of armed farmers during their mission to destroy illegal marijuana crops in Beirut, according to al-Arabya news.
It was the second time in two weeks that the farmers of the Bekaa Valley, 30km east of Beirut, had clashed with the security forces as they were crashing their marijuana plants with tractors. A witness and a security source told al-Arabya that one of the police was shot and the other hit by an anti-personnel mine. Another mine was thrown at their military vehicle, and the tractor which was being used to dig up the marijuana was damaged by bullets. The Bekaa Valley played a strong part in Lebanon's civil war (1975-1990), producing up to 1,000 tons of cannabis resin, used to make hashish, and 30 to 50 tonnes of opium a year. Now, Lebanon is among the top five country for producing cannabis resin, as shown by a recent US study.
This is not the first nor the last time that security forces who try to destroy marijuana crops will find farmers, for whom the crop is easy to grow and profitable, standing up for themselves.

Protesters Confront Lebanon's Marihuana Crop Purge
The Associated Press
Published: Saturday, Aug. 4, 2012 - 3:16 am

BEIRUT, Lebanon -- Lebanon's state news agency says protesters have set up roadblocks of stones and burning tires in attempts to block security forces on missions to destroy marijuana fields in the Bekaa Valley.
The confrontation is part of rising tensions between the government and farmers seeking compensation for the loss of illegal marijuana crops.
The report by the National News Agency says the Saturday protest was joined by mayors from villages in the Yammouneh area outside Baalbek, about 50 kilometers (35 miles) northeast of Beirut.
Bekaa has been a traditional center for marijuana resin for hashish and poppies for opium. Drug cultivation was eradicated under a U.N. program in the early 1990s but has returned as a lucrative alternative to the valley's orchards and olive groves.
