Life expectancy of pollen?

Having the ability to isolate my males, I saved one to collect pollen from. when first couple of pollen balls had burst, I pulled male, placed it in the fold of a piece of parchment paper, and placed plant in a sunlit widow to dry and release pollen. Once male was completely dry, opened parchment, and shook remaining pollen onto paper. Poured the pollen into a test tube along with some rice to keep it dry. It was some time later that I read a post which claimed pollen only lives for about a month off the plant unless it is frozen. Can anyone verify or deny as I didn't freeze my pollen and it has been over a month. So is it tube of life, or tube of dead plant sperm?
