my friend was going to use cfls ,but he managed to get a 400w hps dual spectrum for a reasonable price,so the query is,can the seed go straight under the light after germinating, but maby at a distanceof 6 feet,so as not to shock it,or maby leave it by the window for a couple of days to get going,or would a couple of days under a 15-20w 6400k light be better, hes growing 4 or 5,and couldnt streach to more than 2 cfls,he has pretty much spent his budget,on the hps,and would rather not have to buy cfls,if he didnt have to ,thanks in advance

Yes and no. I would sprout with cfls. Go to youtube and put in 'How to build your own cfl fixture. I made one of these and it works perfect. $20. I also have a 150w for seeds. I think 400w is to much. Expecially if your going to go from veg to flower with same light. Jus my opinion. Make the light, youll love it! Peace

They will be fine under the CFLs for a couple of weeks, and can then safely be put under the 400. There is no point putting any plant, seedling or otherwise, 6 feet away from a 400, since there will be insufficient light at that distance, and the plants will stretch like mad.
