light distance from top of plant?

i am getting a 400watt hps light from InsideSun.com and i don't know how close i should have the light to the plants of my plants does anyone know? cuzz i don't want them burning
 
depends on your ventalation, you will have to do the hand test, if its too hot for you, it's too hot for your plants. i reccomend running a fan on the hps unless it's air coolable already, 12 inches is usually safe, with good venting you can get it closer for even better results and yields, just be safe.
