How important is it to have complete darkness when lights are off when in veg ?
I know its a big no no in flowering but what about in veg ?

You can veg even with complete 24 hour lighting.
The only problem I think there is, is that less energy of the plant is used to improve its rooting system when there are lights.
I have also heard of the possibility that is may be a cause for hermaphrodites, but I am not really experienced with this.

If it is just a little bit of non-direct light it shouldn't make a difference since vegging plants can have 24/7 lights. I haven't had any problems and I have a fish tank for my new clones with 24/7 lighting in the same area as my vegging 18/6 plants. I do however have something blocking the light coming off the sides so only light coming up out of the tank is visible.

out of curiousity, is it officially bad to work during the 'dark' period in the light and have a single standard room light on so you can see what your'e doing? (during 12/12, that is)

guess i should cut that out :x

if you ned to do maintenance during the dark period you need a green light.
