Lighting Question

Hello Gentlemen,

I am new to the site and I just ordered 5 feminized white widow seeds. I live in a small apartment and plan to grow in my room in about 5 feet of space.

What kind of lights do I need? Fluorescent? HPS? How many watts?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

I'd get a couple 6500 K compact florescents for the seedlings first few weeks then switch to a 400 or 600 watt HPS for finishing the seedlings and flowering

LED lights are substantially more energy efficient and instead wasting energy by producing high heat like conventional grow lights, the energy is instead directed to the plant in the form of light. In fact, LED's work so well that NASA uses LED technology to grow plants in space. There are no ballasts or reflectors needed nor does it need any cooling and ventilation equipment as with HPS or Metal Halide lights. It works right out of the box! No offense dude but led's suck, and you say led's will ''outshine" 400 hps hahahahahahahahahahahah you must sell led's

I like leds better
They were quiet, energy eff., and did not produce so much heat
you can get them almost anywhere and are fairly cheap
not saying they are the best
and in no way will they outshine a hps system
but our ballast was so loud and noisy and produced so much heat >_<
I also felt like it sucked so much energy
and for the ufo my boyfriend didnt even let it have a chance
just called it crap 2 weeks after using it and put it in a box to collect dust >_>
but hey everyone has their own opionion and hps, leds and ufos all have their pros and cons

maybe our hps was defective we obtained it quite cheaply
it was a 1000w hps and cost us about 75 used

do hps usually put off mass amounts of heat and loud annoying humming type of sounds?

the new digital ones don't make any sound except for the cooling fan in it.. I use quantum 1000 watters and love them, you can even dim them

Look on ebay, you can but the whole setup or just the ballast. If you really search you should be able to find one for around 275 brand new, which is a smokin deal

led's dont suck, just used in a different application for example from http://easyledgrowlights.com/the-science-behind-led-grow-lights/ says "With LED lights we have the significant advantage of being able to customise the colour of the light, or the wavelength that will be emitted. In essence this means that an LED grow light can be designed fully optimised for the specific frequency of light which is required by a plant in order to grow." In the situation of this thread however, I would recommend a 600w switchable ballast, with HID 600w MH & HPS for optimal growing in a 5 ft sq footprint (directly from CAP recommendation)

go with a 400 watt HPS, you can use it for the whole grow. if HPS good enough for uncle ben then why not cause he knows his shit big time!
