Lighting requirement for flowering males

I'm building a small cabinet for flowering out some males to harvest pollen, the cab will be 3x3x3ft and I'm planning to light it with cheap led lamps which work out at 175Lm/$1 (no heat sinks required and easy to build)

A few questions:

Do males need as much light as females? after all, I'm only trying to harvest a few small flowers off each plant

Could I get away with as little as 1600 lumens per sq foot? My mother plants still seem to get plenty of growth under similar lighting levels

Could I also reduce the time the light is on to save on power? eg. 10/14, without ill effect

You just need the light cycle to be correct to induce hormonal change. There's people flowering little plants under 20w cfls and gets a couple grams, so I think you'll be good if your just looking for pollen.

You should be fine with that lighting for males, everything I've read so far says the males only need a little light to keep growing. I'm currently putting together a cab for my males as well. And reducing the time is fine. Good luck and I hope to grow some of your crosses one day.

My breeding chamber is the same 3x3x3 and I just use 4 26 watt 2700k cfls and it works great.
MMMMMmmmmnnnnn,.......nice one bro.......never thought of cfls for some reason and I've got a box of 10 x 15w lamps in my kitchen cupboard, just need to get lamp holders for them now and they're cheap as chips.

Cheers Joe, the crosses will be a long time coming I'm afraid, although I'd gladly send you some of the BX's I'll be doing first.

I really wish I had a lot more space to grow in, to speed things up and be able to do some true selective breeding, I might still do it the true selective breeding way yet, but that'll take a lot of patience and space planning, growing the same strain of plant out multiple times.

This has got me thinking....................there's gonna be a new thread in the breeders section...............LOL

I like using at least a 400w hps you won't see the males true potential under a couple CFLs the clusters won't be packed it might stretch more than it will under hps etc there's so much more behind it but I always try and use strong lighting for males that's just me
