Low Expectations -What to Do with B Grade beans

I'll pop a few lesser beans each grow : ones I've either popped and declared B, or one of the many freebies accumulated over time. For instance, a Freedom Haze and Paradise Delahaze were used for that purpose a few days ago, and early on they're outperforming the target beans. Sometimes a plant is so impressive it forces her way to the hps bloom room. [ FS c-99 and FoS Cheese Dom were discovered this way ]. MOre often than not - like these - if there's no room, they sometimes get flowered out under CFL in one gal pails [dwc] - just to get a sample harvest of what was in that bean.

Helps keep the electric bill down, and when the occasional very good smoke emerges from low expectations, it's oddly as satisfying as the girls who get the main stage and the AAA treatment. You never know....but you can have a pretty good idea. [ the top group is from GHS the bottom from Sannie. ]

I am so baked right now, I had to delete my incoherent message and just wanted to say that I like to pop a lot of beans A+ or not I don't know why... maybe it is that whole "win the lottery" mentality.

You can barely see it in the first pic - it's the seedling.

The top plant is GHS Exodus - the rankest smelling plant I've ever smelled, and not in a pleasant way [ to me]. The bottom is Sannie's Kolossus which certainly needed far more root space. Even so, it's sparkly and fruity. I've been hitting a 2 month old jar of Kollosus all day, and mucho enjoybolAy - much better than when first harvested. Had I smoked this then, it likely wouldn't have been in the back up bin.

Yeah, I've heard that the freebies are legit at least from attitude. I've grown several and always liked the outcomes, I believe they give you the free beans so you would buy them next time, kinda like how a company offers something for free with a purchase or they lower the price of a menu item temporarily, I believe its all clever marketing over grade B beans, besides knowing whether the plant is a stable or unstable F1 cross or another Fn then I don't see how you could call something a Grade B bean?

I call them B [ or less ] for the following reason:

They are something I was never interested in [ fuel, poo etc ].
They're from a company w/ a poor reputation [ GHS, CC, etc ]
I've grown one or more from a pack and found them less than stellar.
They have extremely long flowering times.
I've ordered and received many others that I have good reason to believe are A strains, or ones that suit my preferences more.

What to Do with B Grade beans? ...........I give my "B"s away to the peeps that help me out over the course of my grows, best of all to hippies I get my soils from, down at the riverside, always grateful!!
they make great presents, and don't cost a lot to post, but you can't tell the seedbanks that ....lol

I give all my freebies to friends that dont get online and order seeds. If they find something worth keeping they give me a cut, unfortunatly havent gotten any worthy keepers from freebies except for a OG#18 and OG from DNA/RP.

Funny you posted this. I was just making a list the other day of all of my beans (I really need to stop buying them).

I'm going to start mixing the freebies in to my rotation. I have a perpetual garden, where 6 plants come down every 3 weeks. For one group of six I'm only going to be flowering 4 plants now, and adding either two fem freebie seedlings or 3 regular freebie seedlings instead. It should be a slow but steady way to work through all of these and see if there is anything worth while. Even if there isn't, I love variety so having some different stuff will be nice.

I grow my b beans when I have space and usually regret that they took up space in my small garden. Then I instantly regret taking clones when one surprises me. I sold some of mine as well.

Nothing wrong with recouping some $$ for more of the beans you really want.

S33dsmans OG fem freebies are looking very stable, both are identical.
I ordered when they had the 2 free Dinafem Cheese Auto's + one is a nice bush/other is a mutant stalk(but growing)

I'll run the 5 SLeeskunk outdoors just to get them out of the way.
Those are C grade beans really, but I've had some surprises from freebies before.
I clone every female until I get a chance to smoke some finished buds, then I decide whether to keep or toss.

I have a spot in the back of the flower room that gets less lumen(corners), which is where the freebies go.

I'm pretty sure Sleestack is either Don or Aaron's favorite plant. I'd imagine they will be better than C grade.

I was wondering about sleetstack... seems like it could have potential. Got ten of those beans and was thinking of popping them some time in April or May as I make selections from my current bean runs.

eta got to narrow down my unknown sexed Bodhi gear.

I usually don't discount most freebees. Always make sure I establish a mom before flowering.

I've had several freebees become long term keepers. We all have that strain where we are all amped up about what fire this pack is going to produce, just to be disappointed. Always nice to have a freebee save the day. I'm always mixing them in with my grows.

Freebees that have been good:

Pyramid - Anesthesia, Tut and Osiris
RP - Silver Kush
DNA - LA Woman, Sour Kosher and Martian Kush
Dinafem - Royal Haze

Freebees that weren't so great...

Herbies - Kerala x Skunk (10 regs, popped 5, got 4 males and the female was not very good, smoked one joint from her and threw the rest in the hash bin)
Dutch Passion - Orange Bud - waste of space

Right you are. Freebies TH A-Train and G-13 Blueberry Gum provided some B+ mom and clones during the wasted days and nights of chasing the overhyped heri [ and her kin ]. Dinafem Amnesia and WoS Afghan Kush x Yumbolt were solid B.

The worst non-auto freebies that popped and finished were 2 from Samsara: Crazy Miss Hyde and Spicy White Devil, and 2 Dinafem Diesel.

Just cause 1 or 2 from a pack are not A's don't mean you can't find an A you kids and your single fems just don't seem to understand selection I'll agree on long flowering times but that has nothing too do with quality and even with a shittier line you can still find that diamond in the ruff. But selection is a big part of finding greats fems are not clones not every seed is the same not even in true breeding lines like Skunk #1 you still need selection to find the best like Black Widow most people get some A's in the 18 packs but a few get a solid white A++ selection is what you need for the best of any line but the clone only's and Polly hybrids are going to have a lot more variation then a true F1 hybrid from 2 fairly true breeding lines. But the polly's and shit still have some keepers just don't expect them to be anything like the next guys experience or even your last.

But you can always send them too me. lol

I don't disagree w/ any of that, but not everyone shares a desire to go diamond hunting through several poor beans [ wasted time and space] to find that one gem that may be lurking. Not everyone has setups [ or patience ] to run mega-week strains.

And that's really the point of this thread. If I ran a cheese dom [for instance] - just one - and it turned out A, I'd surely pop another right away. If it's B or less, the rest of the pack go to the end of the line - or as I call it, the backup bin. [see first post in thread] Then down the line, I'll reach back into this bin to get a few 'extra' beans to back up the next run, with the idea of giving them a chance to impress, but not in the main area of the grow. This is how I found the 2nd cheese dom that slayed me, as well as a 2nd c-99, after the first one was a PIA to run.

I have so many beans now, and jars full of fine smoke, that I see no reason to clone any longer, and my interest in growing isn't hard core....you know, running, selecting, perfecting etc as you describe - but I surely appreciate those that do. Therefore, if I have a unsatisfactory result from a couple of beans out of a pack, why should I pop more - which may [or may not] turn out similar....when I have so many others I'm just dying to try?

Besides.....having beans designated as 'backup' means 'if I need 'em, fine....if all the target beans make it, then it's not so painful to cull the extras.
