I have owned two but have owned nothing else so I really can not comment. They turn the lights on and have gotten some pretty high reviews even more so from growers around here. I think I got mine from mdhydro.com.

i know one guy who tested them to see if he would change over,he claimed most of the hype was bs,except they are light and not as hot and start quickly, but he measured the brightness, and noticed no differance, and his plants gave the same yield, and the power saving was about 5%but he could not be sure it was because of ballast, but if you can afford it,might as well get it,they are alot easier to work with, but as far as a 600 almost the same as a magnetic 1000 the naked eye can still see a huge differance,i always wondered if they tested against a tired 1000 watt light and an old ballast,or tired 600,not to many ive seen take a half hour to get to full brightness, but thats just my opinion,i dont own one,but if i had the money i would get one.

abudsmoker knows about them he uses them atleast i think i got the right person. What the electronic ballast does is that it makes your bulb more useful. It gives off more useful spectrum or something according to him.

I have only had it for a few days now but I got a 600w did from HTGSupply. The maker is Digital Greenhouse. I put it in a closet by itself with a fan on it to keep it from heating up my growroom or any other part of my house I put it in like the ballasts I had used up until that point. Well , I turned the fan off that I had blowing on it since it runs so cool. It is a lot lighter that the old school kind. It is quiet as can be too and much smaller than the old style. It is set up so it can be wall mounted.

If it holds up (only time can tell) I will buy digi over magnetic any day.

I bought mine on ebay - 600w 240 v for $185 includes shipping but not the cordset. For the new digital ballast be sure the one you buy is the new blue or purple color. The gray ones are the old style.

I also found a great price on these at this link - you have to pay shipping but the cordset is included:

600W Lumatek Digital Ballast - 240V | Grow Light Ballast Assemblies=
its not just purple or blue. there 120v purple, 240v blue..... i just got the 1000w... def nicer than other ballasts it is really structurally sound. they fill it with some sorta insulation. only makes noise(barely nothin) for the first 5-10 mins... cost $386 at my hydro store. but i got an eiko bulb, xtrasun reflector and the ballast for $536 in a package deal. real nice investmant i think... Pe@ce..

Yes, you need to get an adapter from the Lumatek to the Hydrofarm. I have a Lumatek 1000W and Sun System Hood, which has the same plus as your Hydrofarm does.

As far as the ballast, I'm not sure yet. Our first one burnt out and it took us 4 months to get a new one. In the meantime our local hydro shop loaned us a magnetic ballast. We're on our second grow now, so we will see how it compares.

I've owned two a 250 watt and a 600 watt. The 250 only fires eye hortilux bulbs reliably. The 600 died after 200 hours. They did replace it right away. I just took it back to the store I bought it from and they gave me a new one. I have about 600 hours on it now with no problems.
