Lumen Calculations

I'm trying to find the area of a 5 gallon bucket. I keep coming up with around 12 square feet, which confuses? I originially planned to grow 16 plants under a single 600 watt HPS lamp putting out 90,000~95,000 lumens, but the square feet per lumen turned out somewhere between 600~700 :-( Made me sad because I was expected MUCH higher. Now I suck ASS at math but this is basically what I'm doing:

5 gallon bucket = diameter of 12"

Basically I like doing circle calculations by breaking them into a square calcuation, since the diameter is consistent no matter where you are on the circle.

12(squared)=144, now that's inches. /12 that's 12sq. feet. WTF? * 16 = 192 squared feet. Now that would take about a 20x10 table top?? And I would only get 500~ lumens per square foot... That doesn't make sense, does it? :-(

Also, might as well slip this in there, I plan on using soil as median +BMO nutrients, flower power and grow it green only plus some scotts soil/worm casting and other stuff. But how do I get rid of the water once I spray it? Do I just put it under a large plastic cover and then drill some holes and use it like a reservior and dump the water just before I re-water my plants?

I don't understand why you are trying to calculate the area of the bucket, to be honest. You want to grow 16 plants under a 600, and the diameter of each pot is one foot, right? So, in a SOG setup, you would want a 4x4 area, with one plant per square foot.

Am I misunderstanding your problem?
