metal halide lamp question

Do you need a ballast for these bulbs? Or can you just put them into a lamp, im not hot on the subject of these lights as I have mostly used cfls.

I am aware that a ballast is required to run the high wattage ones ie 400w and such, but could I get away with using these in a normal light fitting plugged into a wall socket?

if you can get one to screw into a reg light socket id like to see that...yes all hid need a ballast.
those bulbs in the link arent for growing. glass on front is way to thick. 70 wat is the highest i saw so may as well keep tpo cfl if you dont want a real mh light

Thanks for quick reply, I am only growing in a small cupboard and wanted to get it flowering quicker. I thought these might be better than cfls even though they are low wattage.

if it was me id use more of less wattage cfl`s. more less wattages will allow a better light spread around the plant for better over all penetration. even that 70 watter id think with the thick glass would stop most of the inhtensity or certain colours
