I read today that you can use a MH bulb with a HPS fixture as long as they are the same wattage any thoughts?:confused:
 
That Would Be New To Me, My Ballast Are Switchable So No Problem, I Would Consult Store And Manufacture Before, Its One Hell Of A Pop If You Piss Off One Of Those Bulbs, Mine Are 1000w Small Bulbs Not So Bad.

You can buy a MH conversion bulb for hps ballasts. It MUST be the special conversion bulb- google phillips retro white hps.
 
I ran into that same problem dude lol trying to put HPS into MH ballast it didnt work to well started getting hot never stopped heating. I just use a 3000k MH for the hole grow now works rather well.
 
You cant use a hid bulb in a hps ballast it wont work!!!!!!! but you can buy a hid conversion bulb and it will that is what they are made for

mh and hps bulbs are not switchable as the hps needs an igniter which mh balast dont have.You can use the same ballast if its a digital or switchable ballast cutom designed for both otherwise you have to use conversion bulbs.

High Gdave.. True, one can not use MH in HPS ballast & visa versa but there are ballasts that will run either mh or hps bulbs. I just bought a 400 w Gallaxy and it will take either bulb and make the switch internally without manual intervention (except to take the one bulb out and put the other in).

(Replced a damned Lumateck that took to flickering and going off and on.. ON ITS' OWN! 5 months old. Sent it back, they "fixed it" and returned it to me.. I don't trust it now. That is another thread somewhere I'll bet):cuss:

On the other hand, I've become very happy with the HPS for the entire grow, veg thru bloom. HPS has more lumens, screw the color. It works great!:clap:

"You can't use a standard hps bulb in a mh fixture, but you can use a mh bulb in a hps fixture of the same wattage. I didn't think this was possible till several years ago when someone I trust told me it was possible. So I decided to try using a 400 watt mh bulb in a 400 watt hps fixture."
