Mrs. Brown thumb needs help

I have read many threads and there is so much info. it can be overwhelming. I have had 3 attempted failures already and thought buying an aerogarden would take some of the guessing out.

This is what I got and some questions I have:
1st picture: is a seed I started in a plastic bag with wetted paper towel. When the shell broke open I put it in the areogarden in that squishy material it's supposed to grow in. Problem was the root wasn't being held tight enough and the plant started to grow upside down. So the root was not in the squishy stuff and under the light for at least 24hours. When I noticed the two leaves facing down I secured the plant but it seems the damage might have been done already. It has not grown at all in two days and the leaves are slump over. Is it a goner?

2nd and 3rd picture: These two plants were given to me and with the help of the sticky "Replant those sticky stems" they look like this now as of yesterday. They are about four weeks old and stems were very long; approx. 8 inchs. These plants were just thrown is soil, left outside, and not messed with. I don't want to shock them so what should I do from here??? Nutes, lights, watering?

4th picture: I guess I am not a complete failure.... this is my mint for tea!

Hmm, 4 weeks old and 8 inches long. Did you take off all their stems and leaves except the top? I'm confused.
As far as your first seedling, the media looks way to wet man. Seedlings can get root rot very quickly. The media can never dry out either, so pick a happy balance. Let that media dry a little, you don't want it that wet.

Did you touch the tap root or damage it in anyway when you resituated it?

You need some quality soil and maybe some more lights. How many watts of lighting are you currently running?

Being an expert gardener usually means you have killed a lot of plants until you wised up. Germination and seedling are the most vulnerable phases and most plant deaths occur around this time. Seedlings are in a race for their lives. They have to get big enough to defend themselves against mold etc. The longer they spend as seedlings, the more risk there is.

The little seedling looks ok so far. It's probably readjusting to its environment. If you havent done so, place an incandescent lamp above it or a seed mat under the aero thingy to keep the water temps around 90F. Seedlings grow much faster at this temp and faster is better as I explained above. Don't cook the the little thing. 90F is close to body temp. pleasantly warm to touch. Apart from that, just wait. If you think it helps pray. I am not a religious man, but I will quite happily sacrifice a goat or a small child if I think it will help my seedlings . :)

The repotted seedlings look good but the soil looks *very* dry. MJ plants can handle severe dehydration but the seedlings are not that tough. So I say water those right now!

Good luck

Lol!

Thanks for the advice thus far.

I followed the instructions in a sticky to bury the stems up to the leaves and provide better light. It said the stem should start rooting. As for the media, I don't know how I can control the wetness since it is an aerogarden hydro system. The water pour on it for a few hours a day and that is just how wet it is.

I don't think so. I tried really hard to not touch it.

The light is the one that came with the areo garden which is 1560 lumens.

place an incandescent lamp above it or a seed mat under the aero thingy to keep the water temps around 90F.
As I mentioned just about that is the light that is currently being used in this machine. For now I just put a heating pad on low to warm up the water.

QUESTION:
Since this is a hydro system is it ok for the media to be that wet as someone pointed out? Am I vulnerable to root rot with this system?

Oh, and just to add that I watered the two potted plants with tap water and added a little Superthrive and fish type nutes. I hope this was an ok thing to do. I didn't over water, just enough to make the soil wet but not saterated.

I agree with aqua the seedling does look very wet. But if that's the medium that came with the aerogarden it's probably ok. They can stand wetter conditions than in soil because of all the oxygen in the spray but there is still such a thing as too wet.

Nutes? Cant really answer till you say something about the soil. Did you use a potting soil and if so , which one? Some soils have nutes already in them. Seedlings are very sensitive to over fertilization. Even if you do need nutes this early, it has to be very dilute. If in doubt less is best.

Superthrive is not a nute, it's a supplement. You can give that whenever you like.

I too am a bit confused about where the plants are in their development. They look healthy but awful small for 4 weeks. Did they lose a lot of leaves in bury the stem process?

Sounds like you have an 18W fluorescent lamp. This is puny for growing MJ even early on. How far away is the light from the tops of the plants?

In the first few weeks I use one of these about 2" above each plant. At one month I may have four per plant! Check out this thread.

So tell us more details.

Well, since it is a hydro system I am not an expert by any means. I just know from general gardening knowledge that from what I can see from your pic, the media is too wet for the seed. I'm glad you didn't touch the taproot - the oil from your fingers is very deletorious the the delicate root.

Update: 1 fatality (first pic of original post) and possibly loosing the other two pottedones also. I did water the potted plants but apparently not enough. Theyshriveled on me and are clinging to life as we speak.

Ok, as for soil used: miracle grow along mixed with organic potting soil. Inow have lights (5000k cfl’s) 2” away and watered them until the water startedseeping from the bottom. Guess I will have to wait and see if they will survive. Now thatI have read so much info. I am going to try soil again but buy the soil andnutes many have recommended. I need all the help I can get!

But there is hope, I had a feeling I was going to lose my crop so I starteda new seed and she looks very happy and so far is the furtherest I have came to a plant. She looks like she is stretching a littleto me but now have a light hovering 2” above her. In your opinion is shestretching?

Em, yah a lot of stretch. If the bulb's you're using are flurorescent they can actually touch the seedling, don't need to be 2 inches away.
