I'm building a little grow rom in my closet of 39"x35"x96". I will recover the wall with black and white pvc foil and for the light I have a 400w MH/HPS.
How many plants could I grow in my closet ??
How close of the plants should I put my light ??

4 to 6 when mature (depending on plant size), unless you want to get creative with the vertical space (i.e. staggered shelves or something like that.)

How close depends on the kind of bulb, the hood setup (enclosed? ventilated?), the closet temps, and the age of the plants.

1 big one or a few little ones, they will growto fill available space. You have lots of light, and if you can get enough air-flow you should be cool. Iwasusing this kind of set-up at my last place (apartment) and could grow 3 good sized plants. But I had to leave the door open a couple of inches while the light was on. This could be a problem. Good luck.

Are you guys air cooling your lights?

This has always been a typical setup for me. I've been using a 430W HPS in similar spaces for years, and in fact just got done building a new cabinet and have been doing temperature testing all week.

The space I'm working with is 2.5' x 2.5' x 7' . With an aircooled hood on its own ducting (intake and exhaust are both outside the space) the cabinet reaches a max temp of 85 deg F running the light 24 hours a day. Typical temp is 82 or so. This is door closed without any ventilation of the cabinet itself. When I dig up or replace my missing blower fan it seems like it should be trivial to knock the temp down to around 75 and keep it there--it's looking like I won't even have to run the fan constantly, which would allow me to consider CO2 enrichment.

I feel like the 400W range lights are perfect for spaces like this, but air cooling is a necessity.

Nah I was doing this about 10 years ago before we bought our house. That's why I had the door open. Just had a 400 Watt MH hanging in the centre of the closet.

An enclosed air cooled hood makes all the difference...of course you have to vent it properly and have a fan that is able to do so. Add a filter to the intake and you should be able to keep both the temp and the smell to a manageable level.

Maccabee, you have some picture of your set-up ??

And for the ventilation I will put 2 little 6" oscillating fan and 2 computer fan that will bring air from my exterior wall into my closet. And yes my light reflector have a hole on the top to ventilate the light... but don't know when I will do this. I also have a humidyfier and a custom CO2 bottle (yeast/sugar).
