Nirvana's Jock Horror and Barney's LSD

New project, using some things I have learned from previous grows. It seems some of us have greener thumbs than the rest, and I am apparently part of the "rest" *lol*. I am trying to keep it basic for these two girls. Kind of a "reset" in my learning process. So here's what I am rolling with:

Veg Box: Closetmaid Base Cabinet - 34-3/4 in. high x 24 in. wide x 15-1/4 in. deep
Flower Box: Black and Decker plastic utility cabinet. Sorry, don't have measurements - but approximately 6' tall, 3' wide and 14" deep.
Veg Lighting: Glopanel45 28w LED and 2x26w 6500k CFLs
Flower Lighting: GLH 2011 Spectra290W LED
Soil: Sta-green moisture control (MG wannabe, that still sucks)
Nutes: Botanicare line
Soil Additives: Perlite
Plant Date: July 2, 2011
Flower Date: None yet
Strains: Nirvana's Jock Horror, feminized ~~ Barney Farm's LSD feminized

I did not record waterings before they sprouted so with that in mind let's begin:


JH #3 (my third seed sprouted from my order)
7/13 - watered with pH 6.7 water
7/17 - watered with pH 6.48 water + Cal/Mag 4ml/USGAL - noticed some discoloration on the first true leaves' tips and back up the leaf a tiny bit. Second set of leaves have discoloration on tips only. Assuming nute burn from the crap soil.
7/21 - watered with pH 6.43 water - burn progressing. Second set of leaves showing discoloration along with the burn browning.
7/25 - fed Pro Grow @ 4ml/USGAL water was pH 6.43
7/30 - watered with pH 6.41 water + Cal/Mag 5ml/USGAL

LSD #3
7/13 - watered with pH 6.7 water
7/17 - watered with pH 6.48 water + Cal/Mag 4ml/USGAL
7/20 - fed with Pro Gro pH 6.45 4ml/USGAL
7/23 - watered with pH 6.47 + Cal/Mag 4ml/USGAL
7/25 - fed with Pro Gro pH 6.43 4ml/USGAL
7/27 - fed with Pro Gro pH 6.43 14ml/USGAL (light flush)
7/30 - watered with pH 6.45 water

Would really love to hear from anyone who may have grown these two strains before. The LSD appears to be a very heavy feeder, needing some kind of nutes almost as soon as it pops through the soil. For reference, here is a pic of my last grow of LSD, which turned out horribly small. As you can see, she was pretty Nitrogen starved early in life. If I recall, I was growing her in Miracle Gro Organic, which I have since vowed to never use again.

This time, I have been given her a steady supply of nutes and a little Cal/Mag, plus she is already in hot soil. She looks 100x better after a month than did my first attempt at this strain. Still a little red/purple on the stems, but nothing like before.

You may notice I have the JH some food even though it's showing what I am assuming is burn. Well, cheap hot soils tend to feed for about a month, or so I have read - and then you need to supplement. Well, these babies are in party cups, so there isn't as much soil there for one - and it was getting close to a month, so I gave her a light dose of Pro Grow. The recommended dose for seedlings is 7ml/GAL, I gave her 4ml/GAL. I think it should be fine.

I think the most important thing to keep in mind while following this grow is that *I am still learning*

you should join the 'Party Cup growers club'. It's a group of growers here on RIU.org - they grow using 'party cups' only.

Being the experienced grower that I am, I would almost think that growing in a plastic 'party cup' would lead to problems. I say that based on my personal knowledge/experience with cannabis. See, once a plant goes 'root-bound'... the roots are going crazy looking for empty space in the soil.. where the root can expand and further develop. When a plant goes root-bound.. and you don't transfer the plant into a bigger container/pot, which would give the plants roots more volume/area to grow and develop.. but when you dont transfer a 'root-bound' plant.. your asking for problems. When a plant goes root-bound.. it NEEDS to be transplanted, so that its root network can further develop/grow.. which in return, lets the actual plant further develop and grow.

This is one of the more popular issues that I see with new growers and even some experienced growers. They see that their plant(s) are just growing so wonderfully and looking healthy and everythings just going great! Then, suddenly.. they notice that their plant(s) have suddenly stopped growing.. or almost stopped growing. This is very often, a true sign that your plant(s) are root-bound.. and its the plants way of notifying the grower.. that the plant needs to be transplanted into a larger container/pot.. so that it will have the extra empty space to further develop/grow its roots... therefore letting the actual plant further develop/grow.

CG, that is an excellent point and one I have considered (and one that MAY explain some of my flowering issues). Right now, other than what is in flower in another grow, I will be using the party cups as starters. I am planning to harvest 4+ cups from the flower chamber middle/late august, so will have room to move my two current "mothers" (JH and Bubblelicious) into flower, and transplant these two ladies into 1gal pots.

When I was doing party cups under CFLs, I had to water like, literally, every day. Under LEDs it's every 3-5 days, depending on growth stage. The plants I have in flower right now, in party cups, are indeed small and I am having crazy nute issues (it's either major lockout, or major burn). Buds aren't developing like they should, etc. And this is under the Spectra290. My original plan was to keep two mothers in veg, take clones and veg for a week or so, and then flower. I realized trying to keep track of 20 plants instead of 4 was a bit overwhelming, esp since I don't have much of a time window to work with some of them due to real life factors.

From this point onward, party cups for starting only, then transplanting into at least 1gal pots. Thanks for dropping in!

Thanks for stopping by! They do - the first pheno was more Sativa looking, imo - while this one is a bit more Indica. The growth though is similar to other Sativa dom phenos in other strains I have seen (my first LSD, Darkstar for ones I have grown personally). The JH and LSD in the pics above were planted from seed the same day - you can see how much taller the LSD is.

Updates

The burn is slowly progressing on JH3. I have continued to feed, as the soil only feeds about a month. I will be watching the burn and tuning it down, or backing totally off if it keeps going.

For the LSD#3, it looks like N def. Again, this seems to be a heavy feeder, at least compared to what I am used to.
