BUMMING!!

Yesterday I covered the top layer of soil for my 2 cannabis plants with diatomaceous earth 51703 (NON food grade).

Then I discovered it is NOT food grade. My plants are 3 weeks in to flower which should finish in another 6 weeks or so.

My question is: Do I need to toss these plants since I used non food grade DE? I carefully placed in on soil and likely did not get any on the buds.

One option I am considering is to remove it this morning with a vacuum and retop with new soil (FF OF).

From reading so far it seems the real issue is getting it in to a persons lungs.

Any fine powder is bad to get into your lungs, and DE is especially bad because it’s silica.

“Food grade” DE has been mined from deposits that are tested and known to be free of things like heavy metals and other things that you don’t want in your body or food. There is no guarantee that that the DE you used is “unsafe”, but at the same time there is no guarantee that it IS safe either. Some products have info on the label that suggests contacting the company for more information regarding possible heavy metals content. If you’re concerned, I’d definitely start off down that path, and try to get some confirmation and specific info if you can.

If you only sprinkled it on the medium/soil then you don’t need to worry. You’re not planning on smoking the soil are you? You’ll be fine:)

Yeah, I wouldn't worry about it IF you just applied it to the soil. IF you got it on the flowers....that would be a concern. I use DE all the time in my outdoor vegetable garden.....and it's not food grade. In fact, it's "ant-killer" grade! :) Be very careful about applying anything around flowering plants!

Cannabis is a bio accumulator, and WILL absorb heavy metals from the soil. Some DE does contain higher levels of heavy metals that will accumulate in the soil leading to your plant storing them. You then smoke that plant. So you ARE essentially smoking the soil.
I’d look deeper into the stuff you used.

Thank you.

Working on finding out more including from SAFER.
  • OMRI Listed® and compliant for use in organic gardening is on the bag.

The stuff you used may be totally fine but some DE can definitely contain heavy metals.

Also I would disregard the guys saying “as long as you’re not spraying it in the buds it’s fine.” That’s terrible advice! Dont just take my word for it though, there’s a ton of info out there about cannabis accumulating heavy metals

DE is a rather harmless way of treating bug infestations on garden plants compared to a lot of other products. Like I already stated, I wouldn't worry about it. Your DE is designated for garden use. But you absolutely don't want it on your buds. The power will stick to them and you won't be able to get it off. I recommend that you don't apply anything to plants when they are in flower, but applying garden-grade DE to the soil is a very common thing.
