Do you want to know another interesting detail to that? The Roman republic existed from 509 BC to 49 BC when Julius Caesar overthrew the republic. After he was assassinated in 44 BC the senate attempted to reestablish the republic but failed when his lieutenant and nephew (Augustus) were victorious in retaining power. What followed was the notorious Roman Empire.
So many people truly believe the issues we face now are unique and nothing like the ones that the people of Rome faced 2,000 years ago, but they're wrong. I honestly hoping that I'm wrong in the belief that our following the foot steps of ancient Rome doesn't lead us down the path to the "American Empire" and it's collapse.
