When is the right to use nutrients and what kind are best?

Nutrients can be used at dilluted (1/4) strength after the plant reaches 3 nodes and has established a good root system. This applies to seedlings - clones are a different matter.

Nutrients are like ice cream, everybody has their favorites. I use Flora-Nova from General Hydroponics. There are different nutritional needs for plants in veg and plants in flower. You can keep it simple or get very complicated. In the end it is your decision. If you are new to growing as your qustion suggests I would advise to keep it simple for a few grows. fox farm, general hydroponics, and advanced nutrients are all good nutes. i usually give my plants nutes every other watering
