Nutrient Question For Experienced Grower

Hey All,

I just started flowering 2 plants for my first grow ever. They are about 5 weeks old, about 10 inches tall, and been FIM once so there pretty bushy. Would like to Veg longer but due to time/space constraints flowering must happen now and I think there mature enough to handle it(signs of alternating nodes and good thick stems). They've been under a 400w MH bulb until today when i switched to 400W HPS. Sound good so far?

Unfortunately RIU didn't come into my life until after I began growing and I made the rookie mistake of using MG potting soil. It's mixed about 50/50 with perlite. I know, I've since read all the reviews but what can i do? Fortunately they look very healthy and happy so far. Anyways, because i've been using the MG I've been hesitant to use any nutes so far. So i haven't feed them anything but water through the whole veg period. However, i'd like to start using some nutes in the flowering stages and wanted to get some opinions on when some experienced growers might begin using them given the MG soil. I currently have a bottle of Schultz Bloom Plus plant food that claims to produce "Big Beautiful Blooms for all Flowering and Fruiting Plants" Sounds good and everything but when looking a little closer it seems to me that it might be a little high on the phoshate. (10-54-10) I am aware that its highly recommended to start at around a 1/4 dose as to not shock the plant, but should I go looking for a new nute especially because its combined with the MG soil.

So I guess my questions are as follows:

Is it OK to feed nutes during the flowering period combined with the MG soil? and when to begin?
Anybody with experience with Schultz Bloom Plus PLant Food? (10-54-10)?
If not what should I go looking for? (i know people seem to like fox farm. anyone know the NPK % that I should be looking for)

Thanks to everyone who takes a look and can help out, and please excuse my rookie mistakes and if some of my terminology is off.

You are going to get about a million different opinions on what you should do. MG can work for a grow. Lot's of people use it with good success. You realize it has nutes in it already so you are ahead of most. If they look healthy I would wait to feed them as it seems like they are getting what they need already. That food you have may be o.k. but start slowly or you will burn the crap out of your plants. Every fertilizer has a different NPK ratio and people use all kinds of them with decent results. Experiment and see what works best for you. It's too late to change soils now but in the future it's best not to use pre-ferted soil that way you know what they are getting. Best of luck and welcome to RIU.

MG will feed your plants for about 2-3weeks then you can begin light feeding. MG is a really decent product for the money. :peace:

Thank you both for your responses. The bag of MG says it will feed for 3 months. Is it kinda "common Knowledge" that after 2-3 weeks as stated above most of those nutrients are worn off. One thing i forgot to mention and I don't know if this did anything or not. Might have just been a stupid idea but before I planted the seeds I flushed my containers (full of MG/perlite mix) with plain water. Was hoping that would kinda activate some of the nutes and make them less powerful for when i put my little girls in there. I'm just afraid to start feeding too early, especially considering they look like there doing well, but at the same time if they can do better with a little help from some nutes, than I don't want to miss out on that opportunity. Being in the 5th week since seed, if MG nutes wear off in 2-3 wks i should be ok to start with a very light dose?
Calls for 1/4 teaspoon of this powder per gallon. Was gonna start with just a pinch of it maybe and see how it goes? Do the experienced growers generally start giving the flowering nutes as soon as they switch to 12/12? or is it best to wait a few weeks? Same question with molasses? better to wait a little or jump right into it? I understand i should probably just do some research on that cause i'm sure my answers are on this board somewhere but if anyone has some experience with these techniques with a similar setup (soil, lighting, etc...) i'd love to hear some input.

Thanks again everyone.

A freind of mine swears by mg soil, he does a flush after 3wks, then starts with 1/3 doses and works up.
That shultz 10-45-10 is good because you want your phosphorus around 50 for flowering. I've actually used a whole
line of shultz products and for the money they are great.
I do a flush before I start my flowering nutes, and I use about a tbsp of molasas per gallon of water every other feeding.

I am not an expert, but I did use MG Organic for my first grow. My experience was that my plant showed a nitrogen deficiency from the very beginning--purplish stems with some leaf tips showing some purple and the leaf veins, and the leaves did not have a good, strong green color. So, when I move the plant to 3 gallon pot I started using Fox Farm Grow Big immediately. Now, the plant is healthy green and very bushy.

So, IMO, you can start with a growing nutrient as soon as your plant is starting to get good roots. Start with understrength nutes and work up to what is recommended. If you see signs of decline in health of the plant then lay off the nutes, and then restart with a lighter mixture after recovery. The idea is to start slowly as not to stress the plant. Ill effects should be easy to spot if you are vigilant.

MG organic IS a shit product don't even bother with it. Scotts makes a lot of different products and not all of them are created equally but MG potting soil is a good product.
