Odor and activated carbon

Hello,

I am curious about how much activated carbon will be necessary to keep odor to a minimum to none level.

I have a 4" inline fan advertised as running 40 - 80 cfm. My room is light proof and is about 5 x 5 x 6.

I have 28oz of activated carbon and my fan is near the top of the room with all the goodies in an elbow held in by a grate.

Can I expect the smell to be neutralized? Or is still going to stink to high heaven.

Should I invest in ONA gel instead?

Sorry, but a 40 - 80 CFM fan isn't going to pull enough air though a decent charcoal filter.

It's actually not even a charcoal filter, it's duct work with charcoal in it.

I read somewhere the cfm required for scrubbings needs to be the room in cubic feet (150) divided by 5.

5 x 5 x 6 = 150 / 5 = 30 < 40 - 80.

Is your concern the air won't push through the carbon? I'm pretty sure it does cause I'm watching it do it right now.

Not only is it not enough to pull through a filter, its way too small for your area as well. Work on getting a higher powered fan. S&P make excellent inlines that work great, hold up well, and are fairly inexpensive. I have considered ona gel but the replacement ratio of it to keep odor neutralized is what keeps everyone stuck on carbon filters.

You don't need a lot. 28 oz might last you a few months. Negative pressure will make a big difference. Where are you venting to?

don't listen to these other people telling you you don't have the right fan. simple ventilation math tells you otherwise but you already know that since you've done your research. ideally you could be using a bigger one but the one you've got will do just fine.


i don't have any input regarding the carbon...

Thanks.

I am venting into another part of the house. It simply goes from the room that I have light proofed to outside that room.

Does this make a difference?
